ASEPTIC TECHNIQUE
•
Close windows in area before performing
any procedures.
•
Select a clean work area:
-
away from drafts and windows
away from food
close to patient
on a steady surface or table
•
Prepare clean working area.
•
Wash hands thoroughly: (Picture A)

after performing any procedure
after using the bathroom

•
If you have a cough or cold - wear a mask
around the patient or when you perform a
procedure.
•
Cover your nose and mouth when sneezing
or coughing. (Rewash hands and reglove
- if appropriate.)
•
If there is an infection or open cut on
your hand wear gloves.
•
DO NOT touch the ends of sterile parts
of any equipment. (Picture B, C, D)
(Circled shaded area is sterile.)
•
Prepare medications as instructed by your
nurse. (Refer to the appropriate instruction
summary sheet.)
•
NEVER recap needles.
(Picture E)
•
Throw away all used needles in the Sharps
container. (Picture F) and other supplies in
appropriate containers as instructed by your
nurse.
