be expected to cover in Middlesbrough Community Nursing

JOB PURPOSE
Working under the direct supervision of senior nursing staff and strictly in accordance with
Trust guidelines and protocols, the phlebotomist will take blood samples from patients and
will carry out administrative and clinical support tasks for the nursing team.
To make a substantial contribution to the success of the team by providing an excellent
phlebotomy service.

MAIN FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB
To enhance the effectiveness of the team and the quality of patient care by ensuring
effective service for the taking of blood samples from patients in their own homes.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

To perform phlebotomy on patients as per the standard operating procedure (SOP)
for obtaining blood from patients.

To refer any difficulties beyond those covered within the SOP to the senior nurse
on duty.

To record as required the number of patients seen, or other basic information that
may be required by management to help provide the service.

To be courteous to patients, relatives and carers and maintain equality and
diversity.

To have a manner that puts patients at ease.

To help provide simple information as agreed that might be helpful to patients.

Be able to communicate with the laboratory, ward and GP staff at all levels, to help
clarify patient and test details and requirements.

To contribute and implement ideas to improve efficiency and lean working.

To assist the nurses to conduct regular audits and to help them comply with core
standards, policies, procedures and accurate documentation standards.

To understand the sensitive nature of the job and to maintain confidentiality at all
times.

To carry out any other reasonable duties within the overall function, commensurate
with the grading and level of responsibility of the job.
EDUCATION AND TRAINING

Knowledge of community procedures, associated systems, administration and
community service provision acquired through experience and training to NVQ2
equivalent.

Contributes to induction of new members of staff.
COMMUNICATION AND RELATIONSHIP SKILLS:

Provides and receives routine information, requiring tact or persuasive skills;
barriers to understanding. Will regularly exchange information with patients and
staff patients both verbally and in written format; anxious patients; cultural or
language differences.

Gains co-operation using effective interpersonal and facilitative skills and may
occasionally interact with patients or relatives who are emotional or in a distressed
state.
PLANNING & ORGANISATIONAL SKILLS

An ability to work flexibly and across the locality independently.

To plan, structure and organise the daily work load as delegated to by the
caseholder/community matron/clinical lead
PHYSICAL SKILLS

The post holder will be required to move around the locality independently.

The post holder needs to be aware of back care guidance to allow them to safely
take blood samples in patients own home.
RESPONSIBILITIES FOR INFORMATION RESOURCES

The post holder will provide information and advice relating to the taking of blood
samples, to patients/clients/relatives.

The post holder will be required to record patient intervention on electronic patient
records.

Post holder will be responsible for the correct labelling of blood samples in line with
trust policy.
FREEDOM TO ACT

The post holder will be expected to act flexibly and with limited supervision,
although all tasks will be delegated as appropriate.

The post holder will be required to understand Trust policies and strategies and be
able to effectively interpret and implement them within a community setting.
PHYSICAL, MENTAL AND EMOTIONAL EFFORT

The post holder will be required to spend considerable time in patient’s homes and
be required to move independently around the locality.
WORKING CONDITIONS

The ability to work flexibly

Predominately the work is undertaken between 8 am and 6 pm Monday to Friday,
but occasional working out of these hours may be necessary.

The post holder will be required to work within patients own homes.
HEALTH AND SAFETY/RISK MANAGEMENT
All staff are responsible for working with their colleagues to maintain and improve the
quality of services provided to our patients and other service users. This includes
complying at all times with the STHFT policies, including health and safety policies, in
particular by following agreed safe working procedures, and reporting incidents using the
organisations incident reporting system.
INFECTION PREVENTION AND CONTROL
The staff member will ensure that (s)he follows the Trust’s infection prevention and control
policies and procedures to protect patients, staff and others from healthcare-associated
infections. All staff must challenge non-compliance with infection, prevention and control
policies immediately and feedback through the appropriate line managers if required.

The post holder must comply with all policies and procedures designed to ensure equality
of employment and that services are delivered in ways that meet the individual needs of
patients and their families. No person whether they are staff, patient or visitor should
receive less favourable treatment because of their gender, ethnic origin, age, disability,
sexual orientation, religion etc.
PATIENT AND PUBLIC INVOLVEMENT
The Trust has a statutory duty to involve patients and public in evaluating and planning
services. All staff have a responsibility to listen to the views of patients and to contribute to
service improvements based on patient feedback.
RESPECT FOR PATIENT CONFIDENTIALITY
The post holder should respect patient confidentiality at all times and not divulge patient
information unless sanctioned by the requirements of the role.
PRIVACY AND DIGNITY STATEMENT
Responsibility for protecting privacy and dignity does not lie with one individual or group
but with staff at every level. Staff members must adhere to the Policy G112 Privacy and
Dignity. This statement is supported by the Trust Core Values, Fundamental Values and
Behaviours for Nursing and Midwifery Care (2005) and Essence of Care benchmarks
(2003). Particular care is required for vulnerable patient groups including children, young
people, patients who lack capacity, vulnerable adults, and staff should deal sensitively with
the various circumstances in which the patient’s privacy and dignity may be infringed.
