Press release February 2017 Healthy living and working Schüco produces first sustainability report Bielefeld. Schüco, a provider of window, door and façade solutions, has set out its commitment to sustainability in a comprehensive report for the first time. The 64-page document entitled “How will we live and work in the future?” forms the starting point for regular sustainability reporting and communication in accordance with the internationally established guidelines of the “Global Reporting Initiative” (GRI G4). The report provides information about how sustainability is organised at the company, draws up a balance sheet of the ecological, economic and social activities of Schüco and defines objectives for the future. As a company rich in tradition with sites in 43 countries and an employer of 4600 people, Schüco is aware of its particular responsibility. The company makes a contribution in many areas in order to tackle current challenges such as demographic change, modern working environments, urbanisation, increasing energy requirements and – associated with this – ongoing climate change. The “360° sustainability” managerial approach is used as a basis for this. It covers the entire lifecycle of a building project from the design right through to implementation and recycling. The 2015/2016 sustainability report is the result of an “essentiality process” lasting several months, whereby different project groups communicated the topic areas which are relevant to employees and external stakeholders, assigned concrete measures to these topic areas and backed them up with key Further information about publication: Schüco International KG Thomas Lauritzen Karolinenstr. 1–15 33609 Bielefeld, Germany Tel.: +49 (0)521 783-233 Fax: +49 (0)521 783-9208 E-mail: [email protected] www.schueco.de/presse figures. In doing this, five central action areas were identified: products, environment, employees, society and supply chain. Planning and conducting business responsibly In all of these areas, Schüco can already point to activities which highlight the company's particular commitment to sustainability and which are ground-breaking in the industry. For example, Schüco is developing products and processes which are systematically Cradle to Cradle certified. The C2C principle requires environmentally-friendly materials and a waste-free, circular value chain from manufacture and usage through to dismantling, recycling and high-quality re-use. Schüco is one of the pioneers in the development of C2C products in the construction industry and currently has a certified modular system which, with the aid of the SchüCal calculation software, makes it possible to generate C2C verifications for window, door and façade systems. Another point that sets Schüco apart is that it is a member of the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI). Schüco co-founded the initiative in order to work together with other international companies to create standards for a sustainable aluminium value chain. Sustainability begins as far back as the extraction of the raw materials. That is why the Bielefeld-based company is actively involved in ensuring that the aluminium used in their own products has been extracted and fabricated in an environmentally and socially responsible way. Including employees and society as well The sustainability commitment made by Schüco also extends to its own employees. The company offers its employees a variety of measures for occupational health & safety, staying healthy, personal development and balancing work and family life. Furthermore, Schüco maintains active dialogue with key social and academic players, engages in the training of junior staff and participates in many associations and committees. For example, the window and façade specialist is a founding member of the 2° Foundation and, as a “climate ambassador”, 2/4 advocates limiting the effects of climate change and favours decarbonising the economy. Thinking about future generations “Construction means thinking years ahead. The buildings that we are designing today will determine how people will live and work in future. That is a great responsibility,” says Andreas Engelhardt, CEO and Managing Partner of Schüco International KG. “The topic of sustainability therefore has an integrated cross-divisional function at our company, which impacts every business area – with clear structures and responsibilities.” The first sustainability report, which has now been published, is the start of a systematic tackling of sustainability issues. The aim in the first half of 2017 is to create a roadmap for the next five years, in order to assign concrete goals and further measures for the medium-term sustainability focus points in the identified action areas.
