2. JOB PURPOSE AND FREEDOM TO ACT
You will ensure the provision of safe, clinically effective, evidence based individualized
care to all women who are either planning a pregnancy, during the course of pregnancy,
labour or post-partum period. To respond to the needs of the neonate and the family
members, providing support and advice based upon current research and public health
agenda. The midwife will take charge of the ward/department, in the absence of more
senior staff. As an NMC registrant facilitate learning and development of all
staff and students. You will demonstrate strong leadership qualities and be
open, transparent and trustworthy. As a Trust employee act with integrity
and uphold the values and beliefs of the Trust and the NMC Code of Conduct.
3. SCOPE OF THE JOB
You will be expected to provide woman focused and family centred midwifery care within
the Maternity Unit or Primary Care setting.
The successful applicant(s) will work in collaboration with other multidisciplinary
professionals enhancing and promoting the health and well being of mothers and
neonates in line with local and national standards relating to maternity care and making

referrals as appropriate. They will be required to work in all areas of the service including
obstetric theatre and the community as necessary. The midwife will be committed to
achieving the Trust’s targets regarding the Government’s public health agenda.
Information resources:
It is your professional responsibility to document care given, supervise the
documentation others record and in adherence to the NMC standards for record keeping
ensure patient records are accurate.
Human Resources:
As an NMC registrant you will continually work towards professional development,
support, mentor, supervise and teach junior staff, teach others including Maternity Care
assistants, pre and post registration students, newly qualified midwives and newly
appointed staff. You will actively seek feedback on your performance, contribute to your
appraisals and provide constructive feedback to those you supervise. You will keep staff
records up to date. As a senior member of the ward team you will develop a good
understanding of HR processes in order to manage the performance of yourself,
individuals and the team.

Registered Midwife (Diploma/Degree in Midwifery Studies
- now usually obtained during RM training is preferable) or
Equivalent experience
2 years post registration Midwifery experience including
12 months preceptorship.
Evidence of personal and professional development that
will support the registered midwife role.
Perineal suturing and cannulation skills to provide holistic
intrapartum care
Able to demonstrate sound clinical knowledge and the
ability to make clinical decisions based on this knowledge,
referring to the Lead Midwife Practitioner for guidance and
support when appropriate.
Ability to demonstrate awareness of the varying demands
and opportunities created for the midwife role within an
integrated service
Ability to reflect and critically analyze own sphere of
midwifery practice
Ability to demonstrate a working knowledge of current
midwifery matters, Trust policies and procedures
Ability to demonstrate and apply research based practice
Ability to work within the sphere and scope of professional
practice.
Qualification and relevant experience to mentor junior
midwives and students

6. KEY RESULT AREAS

Using evidence-based practice, assess the woman’s physical,
psychological and spiritual needs, plan, implement and evaluate
midwifery care involving the woman and her family, using a ‘Partners in
care’ philosophy.

Ensure midwifery care is flexible to meet the diverse needs of women

Provide emotional support for bereaved parents and their families

Provide evidence of clinical competence through development and the
maintenance of a professional portfolio in support of the knowledge skills
framework.

You will demonstrate effective leadership skills at all times and have the
courage to challenge performance, practice, attitudes and behaviors that
breach the principles of the Trust values and beliefs, the Trust policies
and the NMC Code of Conduct.

Enhance the professional development and safe, caring and
compassionate practice of others through peer support, leadership,

management ensuring effective Clinical Governance

Develop a working knowledge of the social agenda including Child
Protection and Domestic Violence issues- To safeguard and promote the
welfare of children and young people in compliance with Trust and staff
responsibilities under Section 11 of the Children’s Act 2004; to follow

and undertake appropriate mandatory training and updates in

Participate in the development of the midwives role in public health and
family well-being

Plans and implement care of women during pregnancy, labour and post
natal period, ensuring appropriate risk assessment and referring to
appropriate professional for guidance when necessary.

Acquisition of new skills to enhance delivery of care during pregnancy,
labour and the postnatal period.

Protect all confidential information in accordance with the Information Act.


7. COMMUNICATION AND WORKING RELATIONSHIPS

You must understand the role the Supervision of Midwives takes in helping
towards improving maternity services locally and nationally.

It is each midwife’s responsibility to maintain effective communication and
interchange of information between members of the obstetric and midwifery team
and other disciplines involved in care


MOST CHALLENGING PART OF THE JOB
Working Conditions
There will be frequent exposure to dealing with situations in which parents are
bereaved. There will be situations in which you will deal with uncontained body
fluids and foul linen. The post holder may experience some verbal aggression.
Physical Effort
There will be an infrequent requirement to exert moderate physical effort in the
event that moving a patient to another area of the service quickly. This includes
moving and handling of patients, and delivery of direct patient care.
Mental Effort
There will be a frequent requirement for concentration in an unpredictable work
pattern consisting of competing demands for attention, changes of activity and
frequent interruptions.
Emotional Effort
There will be frequent exposure to distressing or emotional circumstances which
includes caring for the bereaved women and their families.
