How does Swine Flu affect you?

What are the signs and symptoms of swine flu in people?
- Symptoms of swine flu are similar to those of regular human
flu and include:
 Fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headaches, chills,
fatigue
 Diarrhea, vomiting
 Severe illness such as pneumonia and respiratory failure
 A worsening of underlying chronic medical conditions

Are there medicines to treat swine flu?
YES.
- The use of prescription medicines fights against the flu virus by keeping

the virus from reproducing in your body.
The CDC recommends using oseltamivir or zanamivir.
Why Does the Flu Happen
Every Year?
There are 3 types of flu… A, B, and C.
Type A changes every year, which is why you
can never be immune to the flu.
It usually occurs frequently in winter & early
spring.
Because the flu changes, or
mutates, when new strains occur,
it can cause an epidemic or
pandemic.


Epidemic - affecting or tending to
affect a VERY large number of
individuals within a population,
community, or region at the
same time.
Pandemic - occurring over a
wide geographic area and
affecting an exceptionally high
proportion of the population
Mutation – a significant change
in the coding of an organism.
