A. Personal Statement
One of my research goals is to develop the rigid biomimetic material scaffolds with stem cell-based therapy for
craniofacial bone regeneration. I invented the biomimetic synthesis that produces hydroxyapatite-gelatin
nanocomposites (HAP-GEL). Since I developed this HAP-GEL system 15 years ago, my laboratory has
continuously evolved new modifications. I am currently developing a newer version of HAP-GEL, from which
new bone cement and printable scaffolds can be synthesized. Prior to developing HAP-GEL, I also studied
dental biomechanics since 1990 and have never stopped biomechanical research in implant design and bone
remodeling. My laboratory equips facilities to perform the proposed biomechanical study. I am currently funded
by NIDCR to develop new polydopamine-laced hydroxyapatite-gelatin (HAP-GEL) nanocomposites and
investigate biomechanics of a nanocrystalline material in orthodontics. In addition, I successfully administered
the projects (e.g. staffing, research protections, budget), collaborated with other researchers, nurture
academicians, and produced more than 100 peer-reviewed publications. In summary, I am a bone bioengineer
who has a demonstrated record of accomplished and productive research projects in an area of high relevance
to this proposed study.
