An audit cycle on postoperative debriefing after
operative deliveries
OBJECTIVE
To assess postnatal debriefing after LSCS and operative vaginal delivery by the doctors.
DESIGN
A retrospective study of case notes.
SETTING
Teaching Hospital in UK.
POPULATION
Initial audit comprised of case notes of 149 patients. This was followed by reaudit in 6
months that studied 153 patients, who had operative deliveries.
METHOD
Review of documentation in postnatal period and analysis of content of debriefing.
RESULTS
Initial audit revealed that out of 149 patients who underwent operative deliveries only 22
patients were reviewed and debriefed by medical staff. 18 % of LSCS and only 10% of
operative vaginal deliveries were debriefed by doctors.
Results of Reaudit were not great either but they showed improvement. As 38 out of 153
patients were debriefed.
CONCLUSION
Childbirth generates strong emotional impact in women‘s life. Especially operative
deliveries may lead symptoms of anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress. It has
noticeable impact on women’s views about future pregnancy and delivery.
This audit cycle revealed that postnatal debriefing and medical review, are deficiencies in
current care. It is a good and safe medical practice to debrief the patient regarding
indications of operative delivery, recovery and its impact on future pregnancies.
