PSA PASEFIKA
THINGS TO DO! As Pacific Island members of PSA, the committee is asking you all to consider and act on the following
tasks:
1. Read the mission statement for PSA Pasefika. Tell us if you endorse the mission statement and/or make further
comment.
2. Endorse or comment on the work so far by the interim committee of PSA Pasefika. This will help to guide us into
the next stage of our work to set up our network.
3. Email your comments to PSA organiser Stella Teariki [email protected]

As with the regional Fono the committee went over the background to PSA Pasefika and the various papers that have been
presented to the PSA Executive Board and CTU Biennial Fono. The spheres of influence within PSA was to highlight where Pacific
Island members sit within the PSA in relation to their own membership and the decision making process involved within PSA
structures. Based on the work already done within each region (Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch) the group worked on
those matters which were important to setting up our committee.
1
How do we make PSA meaningful / relevant within our
organisations:
OPERATIONS
 Need to identify where our PI people are within our
workplaces and then identify who are PSA members.
 Engage and communicate with PSA members through a
number of means (using internal Pasefika networks,
regular staff meetings, engagement at the management
level and further processes to be developed particularly
around new members, PSA journal, Noticeboard, word
of mouth and various media agencies).
 Recruitment – more Pasefika members and more
Pasefika delegates getting access into workplace
delegate structures. Also, getting Pasefika delegates into
training and into governance structures within the PSA.
 Establish the Pasefika committee within the PSA.
COMMUNICATIONS
 Pasefika page in journal
 Komiti Pasefika on the PSA website
 Update PI members in database (contacts/ distribution
list/ delegates list)
 Define and develop a clear structure and strategy for
communication which means that we can easily
disseminate info and make sure that it is relevant
information and can be accessed on both a regional
national structure.
 Communicate in different languages
 Involve all stakeholders
Building a profile and building credibility

strategy
 Having the right buy in from managers through building
a rapport, keeping them informed so that we cultivate a
healthy relationship.
 Pacific training for delegates
 Directory and updated membership lists
 Foundation leadership group
 Youth activity within the PSA
 Building internal networks with PI and then broadening
out to wider sector.

New immigrant interactions initiatives.
The group work placed emphasis on how we can put the above into action. The group identified where there was a requirement
for immediate action and the ideas around these actions.

Interim committee set up meetings
in regions prior to August meeting.
Update to Pasefika members within
our workplaces, networks, sectors,
PSA.
The proposed structure of the committee required a lot of discussion. Also within this discussion is the ability to identify how
the PSA will be structured. The PSA is currently reviewing its structures and this will be discussed further at PSA Congress (22-26
September 2008). The group had decided on one way to structure itself based on information fed back from the Executive
Board. It was suggested to have representation based on four areas as follows:
Proposed PSA Pasefika structure:
Area 1:
Area 2:
Area 3:
Area 4:
Northland and Auckland through to the Bombay hills
5 representatives
Waikato and midlands region
2 representatives
Wellington and Lower North Island
3 representatives
Encompassing the whole South Island
2 representatives
Election of committee:
The group acknowledged that although the above is a recommended structure we don’t have the geographical representation
within the group as it stands. Therefore was decided that an interim national body be established to set up PSA Pasefika
3
strategy over the course of 6 – 12 months after which, should the proposal be endorsed by the PSA Executive Board
implementation would occur nationally.
The entire group was confirmed as the national body in the interim period (6-12 months).
Co-Convenor roles:
Discussion around the importance of establishing leadership roles within the national body.
Recognising that this is an interim committee it was decided to elect two interim co-convenors to provide this leadership role.
Nominated:
Caroline Mareko
Nominated:
Brian Palalagi
Both nominations were accepted and unopposed. It was agreed that through the nomination process on the day Caroline
Mareko and Brian Palalagi to be the convenors of PSA Pasefika.
Development of Mission Statement:
The convenors led the discussion around a mission statement for PSA Pasefika. The group agreed on the following mission
statement.
“Build, strengthen and influence ‘Pasefika for Quality’ to champion and celebrate the interests of Pasefika”
The group brainstormed the mission statement and believe that the above is reflective of what we are trying to achieve as a
functional committee. Any comments from members is welcome on this mission statement and can be sent through to Stella
Teariki (PSA Organiser) at [email protected].
The committee have established a time frame to complete tasks and will be holding another national Fono in Auckland on 10/11
October 2008. If you have any input or comments to make about the work so far please contact Stella Teariki.
