Body Systems
Body System – A group of organs working
together to perform specific functions.
Nervous System
Major Parts: Brain,
Nerves, Spinal Cord,
Senses
Function/Facts:
Controls everything
in the body – the
boss
Excretory/Urinary System
Major Parts: Kidneys, bladder, Ureters,
Urethra
Function: Gets rid of excess waste water
from the blood and body
Respiratory System
Major Parts: Nasal cavity, pharynx, larynx,
trachea, bronchi, lungs, alveoli
Function/Facts:
It gets oxygen into
the body and gets
carbon dioxide out
Integumentary/Skin System
Major Parts: Skin (Epidermis), hair, fingernails
Function/Facts: Outer covering of body, first line
of defense to pathogens, protects everything
Muscular System
Major Parts:
Muscles, tendons
Function/Facts:
Moves the body,
lines other organs,
aids in digestion
Skeletal System
Major Parts: Bones,
cartilage, ligaments
Function/Facts: Protects
& supports organs,
gives shape to the
body, stores calcium,
makes red blood cells.
Circulatory/Cardiovascular System
Major Parts: Heart, blood,
blood vessels
Function/Facts: Moves oxygen
& nutrients to cells using
blood, removes carbon
dioxide & wastes from cells.
Digestive System
Major Parts: Mouth, esophagus, stomach, small
& large intestines, liver, pancreas, gall bladder,
rectum, anus
Function/Facts:
Breaks down food
to a form that cells
can use and
absorbs it into the
blood/body
Reproductive System
Major Parts: Testes (male), Ovaries (female)
Function/Facts: Allows organisms to pass on life.
Produce sex cells (23 chromosomes) that join
in fertilization (46 chromosomes)
Endocrine System
Major Parts: Pituitary
gland, thyroid gland,
adrenal glands,
pancreas
Function/Facts: Produce
hormones (chemicals)
to control activities in
the body.
Lymphatic System
Major Parts: Lymph
nodes, tonsils,
spleen, lymphatic
vessels
Function/Facts: Carries
fluid away from
tissues and into the
lymphatic capillaries
– these return fluid
to the blood.
Immune System
Major Parts: Tonsils, skin,
white blood cells,
mucus, stomach acid
Function/Facts: Defends
body from pathogens
– Parts of several body
systems work together
to make up this system.
