BACKGROUND
 The Union was gaining a lot of momentum
 The Confederates retreat at Vicksburg
 Major General William Rosecrans wanted to move the
Confederate army out of Chattanooga, Tennessee
CONFEDERATE STRATEGY
 Concentrate forces in LaFayette, Georgia
 Fight for Chattanooga
 Follow the Union and try to break the line
UNION STRATEGY
 Hold all territory
 Build on the momentum

 Major General Braxton Bragg








Commander of the Confederate Army of Tennessee
Born into poverty, he wanted to be wealthy
Retired from the military
Jefferson Davis convinced promoted him to get him to fight in the
Civil War
Commanded nearly 40,000 troops
Some believed he was mentally unstable
Became a civil engineer after the war
Died September 27, 1876
UNION GENERAL
 General William S. Rosecrans







Brought up to be very religious
Had a great relationships with his parents
Graduated 5 th in his class at West Point
Loses his command after this battle
Retired from the military in March 1867
Elected to the House of Representatives in 1880
Died in California on March 11, 1898
BATTLE
 General Bragg began to gain ground but could not break the
Union lines
 General Bragg divided his line into two parts with General
James Longstreet commanding the left and Lt. General
Leonidas Polk commanding the right
 It seemed like the Confederates would not be successful, but
were able to drive Federal troops from the battlefield
 Confederates were able to block Union supply lines
 Resulting in a Confederate victory

 Second bloodiest battle of the war
 Future President James Garfield served as a soldier in the
battle

