Edible Scat
Learn about the species that reside at the Deering
Estate; about how they eat and about how they are
adapted to living in this environment.
Snakes
Understand how species adapt and evolve; passing
down traits that help them to survive. Learn about how
species are categorized by Kingdom, Phylum, Class,
Order, Family, Genus, and Species.
Bird Watching
Explore the natural areas and the creek and learn about
how the flow of water had influenced the animals and
plants in the area. Learn about the different bird species
in Florida through bird watching.
Fossils
Learn about the limiting factors that greatly threaten
owl populations and other animals. Analyze the bones
found in owl pellets and compare them to the bones of
other animals in different phyla, identifying differences
and similarities between them.
Butterfly Count
Identify the biotic and abiotic components of soil and
survey the school's yard for native plants and
butterflies.
Canoeing
Discuss predation, mutualism, commensalism,
parasitism, and the many other way in which species
interact on land an in water. Learn about what these
species need in order to survive (limiting factors), and
why it is that they compete for resources.
