DNA Microarray activities

Check out the following sites and answer the questions for
each:
Part 1. Here is the first site from Davidson University. Watch the animation and
answer the following questions. There is sound so turn it down a bit. You may
work in groups of 2 only. If there is more than 2 names on the worksheet, then I
will only count the first 2 names.
http://www.bio.davidson.edu/Courses/genomics/chip/chip.html
1. What is the organisms used in this demo?
2. What is the difference between the 2 reactions?
3. Why are the tubes moving from right to left when Bugs is talking? What
does this do to the samples?
4. Explain the process to make the cDNAs. What enzyme do you think is used
to make the cDNA? How do you think they are “colored?”
5. What does the red, green and yellow spots refer to?
Part 2. Here is the second site from The University of Utah. It contains a virtual
microarray lab. Complete the lab and answer the following questions. This also
has sound. http://learn.genetics.utah.edu/units/biotech/microarray/
1. What is genomics? How does it differ from genetics?
2. How can you tell if a gene is turned on?
3. Is a microarray the same as a GeneChip®?
4. What are the 7 steps required in the microarray experiment?
5. What are the results of the experiment?
Part 3. Bioinformatics. (find your own information from somewhere)
1. What is the field of bioinformatics?
2. What is a BLAST search? How is it used with and relating to bioinformatics?
3. How could bioinformatics be used to study evolution?
4. How could bioinformatics be used to study protein-protein interactions?
5. What is another cool fact about bioinformatics you would like to share?
Conclusion – In groups of 2, explain to someone not in this class
how microarrays work. Remember they probably have limited
knowledge of biology so make sure they get it.
