Kourkoulas Athens April 16, 2013 Statement of Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Dimitris Kourkoulas regarding the Boston Attacks After expressing his disdain for the attacks and the condolences of the Greek Government to the victims and their families, Deputy Minister of Forein Affairs Dimitris Kourkoulas noted the symbolic parallels with the Athenian soldier Pheidippides the very first Marathon runner who collapsed dead after running from Marathon to Athens in order to announce the victory of the liberal Athenian Democracy against its foes. “Marathons by definition symbolize freedom, democracy and tolerance”, stressed Mr. Kourkoulas. “Heinous acts, like the one we witnessed yesterday, cannot negate that message.”
