Hitler, Nazism and the Second
World War

GLOSSARY
Adolf Hitler (1889 – 1945)
Leader of the Nazi Party, who came to power in 1933 and
established a fascist dictatorship in Germany; notorious
for his anti-Jewish policy that resulted in the massacre of
thousands of Jews.
Nazism
The ideology and practice of the Nazi Party of Germany
which was a unique variety of fascism that incorporated
anti-communism, biological racism and anti-Semitism.

Weimar Republic
The parliamentary republic set up in Germany in 1919.Had
to face manifold problems including hyper-inflation, the
obligations of the Treaty of Versailles and political unrest.
Its failure provided the Nazis with the opportunity to seize
power.
Gleischaltung
The concept of coordinating German society. It found
expression in the Nazi desire for total power and in
ensuring the racial purity of Germans.
Sturmabteilung or Storm Troopers
The private army of Hitler formed in 1921, consisting of
former members of the Freicorps and veteran soldiers of
the Great War. They wore khaki shirts with swastika
armbands, ski-caps, knee breeches, woollen socks and
combat boots; used to disrupt meetings of political
opponents especially the communists.

Fuhrer
A German title meaning leader; the unique title that Hitler
gave to himself to indicate that he was the supreme ruler
of Germany.
Treaty of Versailles (1919)
Peace Treaty at the end of the First World War between
Germany and the Allied Powers which made Germany
responsible for causing the war, and imposed a range of
humiliating clauses on it.
Kaiser Wilhelm II (1859 – 1941)
The German Emperor from 1888 to 1918. He declared the
policy of welt politik or world policy which wanted to
project Germany as a leading power.
Gustav Stresemann (1878 – 1929)
Chancellor and Foreign Minister during the period of
Weimar Republic in Germany, who contributed to its
stability and survival for a few years.

Bolshevik Revolution (1917)
A successful political revolution led by Lenin in Russia to
overthrow the Provisional Government of Kerensky and
give power to the Bolsheviks (Communists).
