The Science of the Christian Life
Schedule
Philippians 4:8, 9
I. A person’s success or failure in life can be measured by their priorities.
A. Probably more people succeed or fail in the Christian life because of a misunderstanding concerning priorities
than for any other reason.
II. Most of us have more than we can do.
A. Because we have so much to do, it is easy to get things out of proper order.
B. This becomes one of our greatest problems in life.
C. In these verses we see an order of things
II Peter 1:5-7 And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge;
And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness;
And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity.
D. Several times Paul also warned the Christians to do things in order. He was telling them to put things in their
proper place of importance.
I Corinthians 14:40 Let all things be done decently and in order.
III. The most important things do not attack us for our time.
A. It is the unimportant things that are always vying for our priority attention.
B. Important things are done because they are scheduled, like work, getting up in the morning, and church.
C. Unimportant things fight for our attention; they are the enemy of our priorities
IV. Who is the Boss of your time?
A. Successful people are not lucky.
B. They are people who have learned how to live disciplined lives.
C. They have allowed themselves to be ruled by the self discipline of a schedule.
D. Let your schedule be your Boss.
V. The principles of how we should live by a schedule.
A. Make a list of all your obligations and responsibilities,
1. Be sure to list all of them.
2. It may be a long list but put down everything which is an obligation or responsibility.
B. Put all obligations and responsibilities in order of priority according to the bible.
Acts 6:1-4
1. The preachers were using their time to care for the widows.
2. The disciples realized the preachers were not able to do their priorities, so they instated the office of Deacon,
so preachers could do their priorities.
3. For example, Dr. Hyles’ priorities are: 1. Prayer, 2. Bible, 3. Overseer of the church, 4.Counseling
C. Priorities for a Woman and a Man.
Gen 2:18-23
1. Woman was made for the purpose of fulfilling the man.
2. Man was made to provide for the woman.
3. Man was made for his work; woman was made for the man.
4. God Adam to care for the Garden of Eden, and He made Eve to care for Adam.
5. God did not make man for woman, but he made woman for man.
6. A woman then places the obligation and responsibilities of helping her husband at the top of her list. This is
her Biblical priority.
I Corinthians 11:1-10.
1. God was assigning roles to the man, and God was assigning roles to the Woman.
2. Woman is not to be the protector of the man or the provider of the man. That is the role of the man.
3. Our problem today is that we do not understand our priorities or our roles.
Colossians 3:18-20
1. The role of a child is to obey his parents in all things.
2. It does not say that adults are to obey their parents in all things.
3. To obey their parents is a child’s first priority
4. A wife is not commanded to obey her husband in all things, she is to obey her husband “as it is fit in
the Lord” …This is her priority
5. Woman is to obey the Lord within the scope of the Word of God.
Ephesians 5:21-25
1. There are times when a husband ought to submit to his wife.
2. He is not to be dictator, but the one who delegates in the home.
3. The man should sometimes let the woman make decisions regarding a matter.
4. The man should not be threatened by the woman
Page 3 of 3
5. Followers are to submit to their leaders, but leaders at times should choose to submit to their followers
6. Husband and wife ought to submit one to the other.
Exodus 4: 14-16
1. God told Moses he was to be as God to Aaron
2. We all have others that are to be to us as God, not in the place of God, but their word is to have the same
power over us as the Word of God has over us.
3. All of these things are to help you see the priorities God has established for your lives.
4. That is the second step in establishing a schedule.
VI. Give to each of these the time it requires
Responsibilities & Priorities
A. Make sure to give proper time to the priorities of your life.
B. Begin with the most important duty and work your way down the list according to your priorities.
C. This is the way to keep the least important things from dominating your schedule, and allow you to do the
thinks God has commanded you to do.
VII. Set a time or times for each of these. (Priorities)
A. If you are going to do those things which are your priorities you are going to have to schedule time to do
them.
B. If you do not schedule them lesser important things will take away your time.
VIII. Live by It.
A. There will be things low down on our schedule we will not be able to do because they are low in priority.
B. This is what a schedule is all about.
C. We must learn to live disciplined lives.
D. We can do all that we need to do if we learn how to schedule our priorities
E. Usually the things that need to be scheduled first are usually last, and the things that should be
scheduled last are first, because of time.
Conclusion:
God’s people need to care enough about that which God wants us to do, so that we live our lives by a schedule that
forces and allows us to do so.
Jesus never called us Christians. He called us disciples, which means, “Disciplined ones”. That is what we all
ought to be.
The way to be a disciplined one is to make a science of this matter of schedule and living by it.
