moors – treeless, windy, highland areas that have damp ground

constitutional monarchy – a king or queen is the official head of state, but has little power
devolution – the transfer of power from central government to regional government
peat – wet ground with decaying plants which can be dried and used for fuel
bogs – low swampy lands
navigable – rivers wide or deep enough to allow the passage of ships
republic - a strong central government headed by elected leaders
autobahns - superhighways in Germany
holocaust – systematic murder of more than 6 million Jews by the Nazis during WWII
communist state - a country whose government has strong control over the economy and society as a whole
federal republic - country that the national government and state governments share powers
reunification – bringing two parts together under one government
infrastructure – the transportation and communications networks on which an economy depends
neutrality – refusing to take sides in disagreements and wars between other countries
polders – drained lands in the Netherlands that have rich farming soil
multinational companies – companies that do business in several countries
multilingual – able to speak several languages
