Our organization:
The Alberta Securities Commission is the industry-funded regulator responsible for administering the
province's securities laws. It is entrusted with fostering a fair and efficient capital market in Alberta and
with protecting investors. As a member of the Canadian Securities Administrators, the ASC works to
improve, coordinate and harmonize the regulation of Canada's capital markets.
Within the Market Regulation division, a dynamic team of multi-disciplined professionals in Market
Oversight oversees the equity and derivatives exchanges, clearing agencies, trade repositories, selfregulatory organizations, the Canadian Investor Protection Fund and the MFDA Investor Protection
Corporation regulated in Alberta. We are involved in leading-edge projects aimed at balancing effective
regulation with our stakeholders’ need for innovation and efficient capital markets. We provide regulatory
oversight to Alberta’s capital and derivatives market by overseeing the activities of regulated entities and
proactively identifying emerging risks caused by market changes and developing regulatory solutions to
mitigate those risks.
The opportunity:
We are looking to add to our team an industry professional who wants to make a lasting impact on
Alberta’s capital market. This individual will support and work closely with the team of regulatory analysts
responsible for energy derivatives market oversight in support of ongoing oversight activities.
Key responsibilities include:





Conducting regulatory oversight activities for domestic and foreign derivatives exchanges, clearing
agencies and trade repositories recognized in Alberta.
Conducting research and analysis to identify regulatory solutions to current and emerging issues
related to commodity derivatives markets, including: data and market analysis, market surveillance
initiatives, review of derivatives contracts, derivatives regulation reform and other developments.
Conducting research and providing input in support of derivatives market structure policy initiatives,
including the development of local and national trading rules and policies regarding derivatives
marketplace operations.
Participating on committees which consider market structure policy, derivatives regulation and
oversight matters.
Participating in various short- and long-term projects in support of divisional, operational and
strategic initiatives.
The ideal candidate will possess:







A minimum of eight years of capital and derivatives markets experience, including derivatives trading
and/or clearing operations; preference will be given to candidates with gas, power or crude trading
related experience or equivalent, including back or middle office experience.
Post-secondary education in business, economics, accounting, finance or a related discipline.
Exceptional research, analytical and critical thinking skills; the ability to independently formulate,
support and articulate opinions and recommendations on market structure matters.
Superior written and oral communication skills.
The proven ability to think critically and creatively, be flexible and adaptable, and manage multiple
priorities.
Enrolment in/completion of the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), Energy Risk Professional (ERP)
or Financial Risk Manager (FRM) program is considered an asset.
An understanding of Alberta and North American power, gas and/or crude markets terminology and
current energy trading practices, market trends and marketplace terminology is considered an asset.
