25% (task set by AQA)
2,000 words in 4 hours answering 2 questions
Do you prepare students for 4 topics or hope that the
questions are OK on the 3 they study?
All questions have 3 parts
Longish exam
Heavy weighting. 12.5% per question
In section A ONE choice all pre-1929
6 pre-1945 options plus 4 post, but students can do
all their history pre-1945 if they want to
Section B have 2 parts a. 8 marks b.12 marks
One question will be set on each of the 10 topics
Candidates answer 1 question from Section A and 2
from section B
No Britain 1905-51 depth study?
Note that the Civil Rights section is much narrower in
coverage than on the draft spec. as is Northern Ireland
which stops in 1986, and Middle East which stops in 1979.
Effectively 12.5% each depth study
The slant AQA takes is very much comparative. Key
questions require reference to both wars. It is really
important that you realise that the first 2 options
require candidates to compare World War One with
World War Two, so it is not just a case of studying
one. The key questions for the third option are
phrased in a less comparative way. .Please note that
the italicised section to the left was added by me
to clarify. It is not part of the spec.
25% on this one section
Question 1 (1 hour 30) 800 words Question 2 (2
hours) 1200 words.
EDEXCEL Modern World
UNIT 1
International Relations 1900-1991 ; outline study
Students must cover 3 sections from choice of 6
1. Why did war break out 1900-14?
2. The Peace Settlement 1918-28 (for some reason no question with this)
3. Why did war break out 1929-39?
4. How did the Cold War develop,1943-56?
5. Three Cold War crises 1957-69 (again no unifying question)
6. Why did the Cold War end 1979-9?
Radical restructuring whilst still
allowing centres to follow
existing topics in different
sections.
The weighting for International
Relations is lighter than in
most Modern World specs.

are provided in the task. The
third may be selected from a
pre approved list or chosen by
centres. This enables centres
to customise or provide a local

family life, work, leisure, impact of industrialisation 1750-1950
25% Controlled assessment : 15% of which is AO3
As previously the time periods are more
restricted making it more attractive to some
schools
Note NEW development study on WARFARE
Note only 25% for this section, compared with
40% for AQA
Innovative. Does it bring coherence to the
course?
Does it add much to earlier study, if chosen as part of
Medicine? But still interesting.
Interesting departure, spec suggests comparative case studies on
Richard III and Cromwell, importance of a local factory!, an
investigation into grandparent’s experience of WW2, changes in
women’s lives during the industrial Revolution or the experiences
of immigrants in 1950s.
More of a blend of development and Modern World study
Tasks made available prior to start of Autumn term.
Structured as:

Part Bi. compare two representations, at least one from later
than the event, issue, or individual. 10 marks ( AO3)

Structure of specification is unchanged
Yes, students really do restrict themselves to just ONE
period.
3 key questions for each period. Section C contains
questions such as :
How secure was the USSR’s control over Eastern
Europe, 1948 -c.1989?
How effective has terrorism been since 1969?
The significance of the Iraq war.
The aim here is to give a reasonable span of
time, about 40 years
Please notes that Depth Study 15 is referred to
twice in the OCR spec as ending in 1914, when
obviously 1918 is the terminal date. Quite an
error!
Depth study worth 22.5%
Very long exam for some
Note the broadening of the British History options.
Those used to studying from 1906 onwards will need
to note questions such as What were the working and
living conditions of the poor like in the 1890s?
How were social reformers reacting to the social
problems of the 1890s? All this is largely a question of
making what was once introductory now centre-stage.
The post 1939 section is very new for most schools.
Candidates write c. 2,000 words. New task for each
option each year. Centres can adapt the task only very
slightly
th
st
Role of individual must be 20 and 21 century
th
st
Thematic must span 40 years of 20 /21 centuries

societies/countries 1850-2005.
Allows very recent study here if not tackled in Unit 1
