3- rd course
This “discipline” focuses on the theory and practical challenges in governing for sustainable
regional development in Russia’s regions. The concept of sustainable regional development
includes a wide focus on diverse geographic environments (Siberia, the North, the South,
European Russia and the Far East) and a contemporary focus on challenges of globalization to
which regions must respond. It explores organizational and cognitive proximity (linking
development across boundaries and sectors in an ecosystem approach). This course will also
focus by case studies on actual challenges for sustainable growth, including the development of
services and sectors, such as tourism, and trade-offs between resource development and
environmental protection. It emphasizes governance for skill development and synergies across
sections and communities to foster innovative milieu. It shows advantages of strategic
coordination for the development of clusters. A central course objective is to foster an
understanding of the links between the workplace and region in the pursuit of sustainable
development and shared prosperity.
