Bacteria
Microbiology - is the study of microscopic organisms, including bacteria and viruses,
and the affect they have on a host cell or organism.
Disease/Pathogen - anything that causes a negative effect on an organism that is
not related to a physical injury, such as a virus, bacteria, fungus or parasite.
Bacteria – Any of a large group of one-celled organisms that lack a membrane-bound
nucleus.
Antibiotics – drugs that kill bacteria or prevent their reproduction
Parasite – an organism that lives and eats off of another organism. In most cases, it
will not kill the host, but it can make the host weak or sick.
Fungi – any of a diverse group of eukaryotic single-celled organisms that live by
decomposing and absorbing the organic material in which they grow.
Virus – a nonliving particle that consists of a microscopic core of genetic material
surrounded by a protein coating
Vaccine – a weakened or dead form of a pathogen that causes an organism to
develop immunity against that pathogen. Example: the flu shot
Host Cell - a cell that provides the necessary energy and material for a virus to
reproduce
Contamination - the presence of an unwanted substance in any environment.
