WHAT CAUSES INFECTIOUS DISEASES
 Caused by a pathogen
 An organism that causes a disease in another
living thing
 Virus, Bacteria, Protozoa, Fungi
HOW PATHOGENS SPREAD
 Through food or water
 Harmful bacteria can contaminate food to cause food poisoning
 Spread through sexual contact
 Droplets in the air
 Sent through a cough or sneeze
 Deposited on objects or surfaces
 Picking up athletes foot from the floor of a gym
 Spread by vectors
 When another organism carries the pathogen from one to
another
PREVENTING THE SPREAD
 Eat healthy and get enough sleep
 Vaccines
 Wash your hands
 Avoid touching your eyes, mouth, or nose
 Avoid close contact with people who are sick
 Cover your coughs and sneezes
 Disinfect frequently touched surfaces
 Stay home when you are sick
