Chapter-22 Understanding Diversity
 Diversity - The quality or state of being different or varied.
 The bases of diversity in India are : Geographical , Economic , Religious and Cultural
diversity.
 People in India vary on grounds of race, caste, religion etc.
 There are 22 languages in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution.
 People from various parts of the world had come due to various reasons which led to
development of diverse and unique culture.
 Geographical Diversity-People of India live in different geographical area that results in
diversity.
 People eat different foods in different areas: Kashmir-meat and milk products , Coastal
areas-rice, fish, and coconut.
 Economic Diversity- Economic activities are influenced by geographical conditions of an
area.

 Religious Diversity- India is a home to various religions. Main religions that thrive in
India are Hinduism, Islam, Christianity, Buddhism, Jainism, Zoroastrianism and
Sikhism.
 Our Constitution declares that India a secular country where equal respect is given to all
religions.
 Cultural Diversity-The influence of the environment is also visible in culture often
reflected in festivals, customs, dance forms, of the area.

In spite of diversity Indians live united.
Diversity teaches us to be open minded and tolerant.
We respect people with different beliefs, viewpoints, tastes, customs, cultures.
The Indian Constitution lays down the Right to Equality as a Fundamental Right.
