CHAPTER - 11 OUR ENVIRONMENT







Environment- The word environment is derived from the French word Environer which
means ' to surround'
Based on the physical state characteristics environment is divided into Lithosphere ,
Hydrosphere and Atmosphere.
Lithosphere- Land that is solid surface of the Earth.
Hydrosphere- Water or liquid on the Earth.
Atmosphere- Mixture of gases which surround the Earth.
Biosphere - Interaction of three sphere is known as Biosphere.
Extent of biosphere - From the bottom of the ocean (about 11,000 m below sea level)
to the top of the highest mountains ( about 9,000 m above sea level).

Chipko Movement- It was a movement in Uttarakhand against the agencies that cause
harm to ecological balance. One of famous leader of this protest was Sunderlal
Bhaguna.
Global warming - An increase in the amount of carbon dioxide in the air has led to
global warming. It is defined as the rising average temperature of the atmosphere of the
Earth as well as the oceans.
Sustainable development - It is the way of development when the existing sources are
not compromise or without harming the sources of future generations.
