IB lifetime code
If your current/previous school is an IB
school please give the lifetime code that
you would have had for examinations in
this school. This will be a six digit number
with three letters and three numbers
_ _ _ _ _ _
Proposed IB courses at Atlantic College
Please use the information in the student handbook as guidance along with the Academic
Syllabus and Maths information provided with the joining papers. This is very much your first
attempt to choose your programme, and can be changed later. It does not commit you to the
subjects chosen.
You must choose three subjects at Higher Level and three subjects at Standard Level. At least
one subject must be chosen from Groups 1 to 5, but in Group 6 you can choose either an Arts
Elective (Art, Music) or a second choice from Groups 1 to 4. For example a student intending to
study medicine would normally choose a second science from group 4 instead of Group 6 and
do two Sciences at higher level. A linguist might choose a second foreign language in Group 2
instead of Group 6.
Higher Level
Group 1
(Language A)
Group 2
(Language B)
Group 3
(Individuals and
Societies)
Group 4
(Science)
Group 5
(Mathematics)
Group 6
(Arts Electives or Second
Subject from Groups 1-4)
Standard Level
E Systems & Society
2.
In selecting your subject please be aware of the following:

Higher level Mathematics assumes an advanced level of prior knowledge and skills. This
is an extremely demanding Mathematics course designed for students who need to use
Mathematics as a key skill in their future careers [for example Engineering, Physics,
Econometrics [a mathematical branch of Economics]. We will advise you when you arrive
on this and there is a placement test on arrival to test whether it is suitable for you.

Higher level Physics, Chemistry and Biology also assume a reasonably high level of prior
knowledge and skills although these might be in the form of General Science. For Higher
Level Physics you need to be good at Mathematics.

Many of our students do their first/mother tongue/ best language as a self-taught teacherdirected option. This is perfectly acceptable and makes sense. English can then be done
either as a Group 1 subject, focusing on literature or language and literature [if you are
fluent in English] or as a Group 2 subject if you are learning the language. Students are
expected to do one English course [either in Group 1 or 2] as this is the language of
instruction in the school. Doing English will help you with all your other subjects. If you
have a third language and enjoy languages it is often a good idea to do this as your
choice instead of a Group 6 subject. You can also take a language at a beginner level.

If you choose English please state which English subject you wish to study:
Group (1) English Literature HL or English Language/Literature HL or SL
Group (2) English B Higher Level or English B Standard Level

The Standard Level Environmental Systems and Societies course is unique. This
standard level course counts as a choice in both Group 3 and 4 so this means it
increases your flexibility and you can choose two other courses from Groups 1-6.

When choosing a Language B option please specify which level you would like to study;
For example – ab initio is for beginners or those with a limited knowledge
B is for those who have studied the language previously

Please see the attached Matrix of IB Prerequisites for Universities in most popular
destinations for insights about which course combination might be required for certain
career path. It is important to note that entry requirements can vary and change, so this
information cannot be taken as definitive and is a guideline only. It is essential that
students conduct their own research to ensure their IB subject combination meets their
needs
