Probability/Statistics Plan HQT Beyea Nowakowski 2/17/2016 Standards Rational Objectives/Learning Outcomes Evaluation Procedure Curricular Areas Adaptations Materials Understand and evaluate random processes underlying statistical experiments SP.IC.912.1a Determine whether the data could come from a data-generating device (spinner, coin, number cube). SP.IC.912.1b Determine the likelihood (likely, impossible, unlikely, certain) of outcomes from a data-generating device. SP.IC.912.1c Determine the likelihood (likely or unlikely) of an outcome from a data-generating device. To introduce students to age appropriate Probability/Statistics concepts by using real –world objects they see during daily life experiences. Students will participate by counting objects and picking a number to complete a math sentence Students will use manipulatives or objects to represent and solve a math problem Students will write, read and solve a math problem (using modifications for individual students) Can students solve the math problem verbally or with with visuals? Can students represent the math problem and complete the sentence using statistics? Can students illustrate the math problem with manipulatives and solve? Can students act out a math problem with cards/visuals? Explain that statistics and probability by using a coin and talk about the probability or likelihood that it will be heads. Use the coin to show them this Get out the cards and ask them what the probability is that they will pick a specific card out of the deck. After they calculate, model this Tell them that they are going to play spoons but while playing we are going to use statistics. Ask them what the probability will for people getting a spoon Before cards are thrown in, have everyone show their cards and discuss the probabilities again. Statistics/Probability Post it notes with numbers wrote on them to give Connor 2 choices to answer questions or an extra set of cards Spoons and cards Reflection of my Lesson: What worked and why? I feel the lesson went well and due to the fact that the students were familiar with this game and have played a few times prior to the lesson. What did you learn from this lesson? I learned that my students are able to understand statistics/probability due to explaining and exposing them to this concept in such a simplistic way. If you were to teach this lesson again, what would you change and why? How can you further apply what you have learned to future lessons? Take more risks and incorporate more statistics and probability if I have to teach a core math class in the future. We have already started working on rolling for doubles with large dice daily and talking about the probability of this while working on simple addition.
