Wheat (Mill delivery) to Fetch Harvest Price Lower than MSP FAO's first forecast for world wheat production in 2012 stands at 690 million tonnes, 10 million tonnes less than last year's record high, but still the second largest crop, as per FAO's quarterly Crop Prospects and Food Situation report. The Agriculture Ministry in its 2nd advance estimate has pegged wheat output in the country at 88.31 million tonnes in 2011-12 crop year (July-June) from 86.87 million tonnes in the year-ago period. The total sowing acreage of Wheat crop in Rajasthan was at 26.78 lakh hectares as on 30 December 2011, down 11.79 % from the last year in the same time. Moreover, concerns related to high temperature during the day period in major lower rainfall states such as Rajasthan, Haryana, U.P. and Punjab might also impact the total Wheat production. Market has confirmed that farmers are in need of wheat prices that might prevail during April - May 2012 so that they can take a Selling decision on the same as of now. The price forecasting taken up by the agricultural economist Dr. S.S.Burark, Assoc. Prof. under the aegis of the NAIP-Agricultural Market Intelligence Cell of Maharana Pratap University of Agriculture and Technology, Udaipur seems to be reaching the farming community in a better way. Agriculture Market Intelligence Cell (AMIC) studied the price behaviour of wheat (mill delivery) based on the monthly time series data of the Kota regulated market for a period of 12 years from April 2000 onwards and the Econometric analysis of wheat price and market survey concluded that the prices are expected to hover around Rs. 1150 to Rs. 1250 per quintal for the post harvesting months (April to May 2012) in markets like Kota. The minimum support price of wheat announced by the Govt. for this season is Rs 1285 per quintal. Therefore; farmers are advised to sell the produce to the government agency immediately after harvest.
