Curriculum plan for Kingfisher / Raven The students in Kingfisher and Raven will be working on individual objectives related to their individual needs from the STEPS programme. The skills being developed with each of the students will reflect advice from a range of professionals including the OT, school nursing team and SALT. Parents will be consulted to ensure all developments in school are helpful to families in the home environment Year 9-11 students across the two classes will be working on developing number skills using the Personal Progress Unit accreditations, designed for their individual levels of understanding and achievement. Year 12-14 students will widen their skills in this area by using money and basic time skills in the local community, also accredited by the Personal Progress Units. All of the students will develop their understanding of measures, by undertaking cooking activities in the classroom and being involved in the preparation of drinks and snacks as appropriate Autumn The students in Kingfisher and Raven will have opportunities to develop their understanding of their local community by actively using the local facilities available to them leading to accreditation. All students will have the opportunity to engage in visits and activities appropriate for their needs and understanding. The year 12-14 students will be given opportunities to develop their skills for the workplace, by following instructions and being made aware of safety in their environments Cultural weeks will also broaden the range of experiences for the students All students in Kingfisher and Raven will have access to stories in a paper, audio or electronic format. Drama will also be used to ensure that stories are understood using a variety of sensory props and costumes. All students will be encouraged in mark making in a variety of situations, using appropriate media to suit their needs. ICT will be used throughout to support this development, including the use of touch screens, switches, ipads, iPods and any other equipment that is felt to be beneficial. Advice from the OT will be used to consider posture and writing aids. Advice will also be sought from the VI and Hi advisory teams for individual students The students in Kingfisher and Raven will develop their individual independence skills via a number of specialist interv4ention strategies; these may include TEACCH, TACPAC, sensology, and swimming, using switches in ICT and other areas and sensory circuits. Advice will be sought from other professionals in the development of individualised programmes for the students. All students will be encouraged to aid in their personal care regimes whenever possible. All students will be encouraged to engage with their peers at lunchtimes independently. Communication is given the highest priority for students in Kingfisher and Raven. All students will be working on individual communication objectives as highlighted by their ILP’s. Individual strategies advised by SALT, OT, and other professionals will be developed to develop the students communication skills. The use of specialised strategies as outlined in the Independence box will aid the development of meaningful communication for all of the students in a communication friendly environment, taking account of individual needs and development. The students in Kingfisher and Raven will have access to a full range of stories, drama and art activities from around the World. They will be involved in a termly cultural week, where they will be immersed in a number of different cultures from around the world. They will also be given the opportunity to express themselves in a variety of ways that will lead to accredited units for their Personal Progress Units, at their own level of understanding and participation. The students in Kingfisher and Raven will have weekly access to the swimming pool and individual sensory circuits’ activities. They will also have the opportunity to undertake Sherborne movement sessions on a regular basis throughout the week. Other physical activities including physiotherapy will be included in their individual timetables as appropriate and activities suggested by the OT will also be incorporated into individual timetables. Access to the local community will also be on foot for the majority of students to develop stamina and confidence in walking in different environments
