Summer Reading and Math 2017 New Franklin School Donna Turco Reading Specialist Statistics Students with access to books over summer perform 35-50% higher on reading achievement tests. Students who don't read fall an average of 2 months behind. Students who read over the summer make slight gains! Helping your child Grow! Prevent the summer slide: ◎Read every day ◎Library visits ◎Practice writing ◎Model reading behavior ◎Engage in conversation ◎Read with your child ◎Variety of text Read everyday Library Visits ◎New Franklin Library Mondays: July 10, 17, 24, 31, Aug 21 8:00-12:00 ◎Guidance with choosing just right books ◎Summer Reading Programs Practice Writing Provide reasons to write: ◎Write to friends they may be missing ◎Start a Summer journal or scrapbook ◎Book Blog, reviews Model reading behavior Send a message! ◎ They will mimic your behaviors. ◎ Write notes/letters to each other. ◎ Read the same book at the same time and then talk about it. Engage in conversation Stimulating conversation boosts language and vocabulary skills. Comprehension skills are enhanced when talking about what was read. Conversation Starters: *What did you notice? *Were there tricky parts? *How did you work through them? *Did this book remind you of anything? *What were you wondering while you read? *Does this make you think of anything else? *What was your favorite part? * Why? *Was there a part that surprised you? *What was it? *Why do you think the author wrote this? *What will you read next? *How did you decide? Read with your child Benefits Builds listening skills, imagination, and vocabulary. Hearing expressive reading increases fluency while keeping them engaged. Reading together shows a love for reading. Things to try Read in a variety of locations: inside, outside, fort, park, beach, coffee shop, library, “on location”. Take turns reading to each other.
