W.A.M. (Writing About Math)
Either or: Write about A or B:
A. Is it more difficult to put a number in
scientific notation or exponential (standard)
notation?
OR
B. Which is more difficult to identify rational
numbers or irrational numbers? Explain.

MCC8.EE.7 Solve linear equations in one variable. a. Give examples of linear
equations in one variable with one solution, infinitely many solutions, or no
solutions. Show which of these possibilities is the case by successively
transforming the given equation into simpler forms, until an equivalent equation
of the form x = a, a = b, or a = a results (where a and b are different numbers). b.

Standards for
Mathematical
Practice
Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
Model with mathematics.
Use appropriate tools strategically.
Attend to precision.
Look for and make use of structure.
Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.
II canCan…
use strategies to create and solve linear equations with one solution,
infinitely many solutions, or no solutions.
Create 4-5 sentences that you believe
is true about solving equations.
Vocabulary Word
Definition
Linear Equation
An equation that can be written in the form ax + b = c where
a, b, and c are real numbers and a≠0
Integer
A whole number; a number that is not a fraction (can be
negative).
Inverse Operations
Pairs of operations that undo each other, for example,
addition and subtraction and inverse operations and
multiplication and division are inverse operations.
Additive Inverse
Two numbers whose sum is 0 are additive inverses of one
another. Example: ¾ and – ¾ are additive inverses of one
another because ¾ + (- ¾) = 0
Algebraic Expression
A mathematical phrase involving at least one variable.
Expressions can contain numbers and operation symbols.
Independent Practice
• Finish practice problems
– Complete maze

Vocabulary Word
Definition
Variable
A letter or symbol used to represent a number.
Coefficient
A numerical or constant quantity placed before and multiplying the
variable in an algebraic expression (e.g., 4 in 4x)
Evaluate
To perform operations to obtain a single number or value
Solution
The value or values of a variable that make an equation a true
statement.
Like Terms
In algebra, like terms are terms that have the same variables and
powers. Only the coefficients of like terms can be different.
Switch and Solve
• Create your own equations one or two
step
– switch papers with your neighbor and have
them solve it!
