Historic Thinking Skill Task-Causation: After the devastation of World War II and the
looming threat of atomic war, the United States was now a World Superpower along with
the Soviet Union, but wanted to avoid a direct confrontation. The next war would surely
be worse than the 60 million left dead by WWII. For the following terms explain how

Historic Thinking Skill Task-Evaluation: The Soviet Union was a legitimate threat to
the United States and was actively trying to undermine the United States. Beginning with
President Truman, the Federal Government began taking steps to protect national
security. Sometimes these steps were legitimate responses to the threat, other times the
Federal Government over stepped its power and violated the rights and freedoms of its
own citizens. For each term below, evaluate on what information you are given whether
or not the reaction was legitimate response to the threat of the Soviet Union or an
overreaction.

Historic Thinking Skill Task-Comparison:
Economic prosperity was another effect of the war. While all the other major capitals
were repairing, the US and its economy emerged stronger than ever. This prosperity was
spread to the most people like never before. The Federal Government continued to play a
role in spreading prosperity. Those who were not part of this prosperity(minorities,
women) began to protest with more successes that they should be part of the American
Identity and deserved the same benefits. The impact of World War II and the morality of
the war also aided these groups. For the following terms explain how prosperity was
either being expanded with the help of the government or prosperity being denied.
Employment Act of 1946
Housing Act of 1949
Fair Deal
Executive Order 9981
Levittown
FHA Loans
