Derision or a form of this word is found in the KJV Bible 30 or more times. It is
most often found in the Old Testament. Its meaning carries the sense of someone or
something or some belief being mocked, ridiculed or, in our language today, ‘being
made fun of’.
One of the most solemn Old Testament passages is found in Psa. 2:2-4. “The kings
of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD,
and against his anointed, saying, Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away
their cords from us. He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have
them in derision.” This solemn passage is a prophetic reference to the way men
would treat the Lord Jesus Christ, the Eternal Son of God and Messiah of Israel,
when He was born in this world. He is God’s ‘anointed’, yet mankind in hatred of
Him and guided by Satan, knowingly rejected Him, seeking to throw off any
responsibility to God by crucifying the Lord Jesus.
God’s answer to this is to ‘mock’ (have them in derision) those who refuse to submit
to the Lord Jesus’ Godhead authority. The day is soon to come when the Lord Jesus
will reign as King supreme in this world and then all who have hated Him, will be
in great distress, and finally will be punished for their rejection of the Lord Jesus.
In the New Testament in Luke’s Gospel, the Lord Jesus, before being crucified is
mocked and derided by the Jewish leaders as well as the Roman leaders and
soldiers. (see Luke 23:35).
How wonderful that those who know the Lord Jesus as Saviour have the privilege
of worshipping and following Him in a world that still derides His blessed Name.
