Update on the American Board of Orthodontics
I
N February 2010, the American
Board of Orthodontics (ABO)
conducted its Clinical Examination
in Dallas, Texas. This examination
was the largest yet, with 288 examinees
presenting 1,618 cases to 64 examiners.
As of April 1, the number of Diplomates has reached 5,091, which is
53% of the American Association
of Orthodontists’ membership. This
examination session included the
First Recertification Examination
for orthodontists who selected the
Gateway Offer, the Initial Certification
Examination (ICE) for orthodontists
who recently completed their postdoctoral programs, and the traditional
Clinical Examination of orthodontists
completing Option I or Option II
certification pathways. The American
Board of Orthodontics certified 231 of
the 288 examinees, resulting in an 80.2%
pass rate.
David Kennedy (Vancouver, B.C.), James Garol (Reno, NV),
Lesley Williams (Delta, B.C. Canada), Steven Dugoni
(San Francisco, CA), and David Rynearson (Moreno Valley, CA)
I served as an examiner at the February
examination along with four other members of the PCSO:
Dr. James Garol (Reno, NV) Drs. David Kennedy and Lesley
Williams (Vancouver, B.C.), and Dr. David Rynearson
(Moreno Valley, CA).
All of the examiners worked very hard. Upon arriving in
Dallas, we attended a full-day orientation program and calibration session for the cast-radiograph evaluation. Then we began
the examinations, which took five days to complete. We examined two to four candidates each day. All of the examiners
worked from 7a.m. to 9p.m., reviewing cases and preparing
questions to present to the candidates.
The members of the PCSO said that they felt honored to serve
as examiners for the American Board of Orthodontics. They all
described the experience as professionally rewarding, profoundly meaningful and intellectually stimulating. Dr. Garol
commented, “I was impressed with the organization of the ABO
staff and directors. Their commitment to providing a fair and
thorough examination was clearly evident at every level.” All
the examiners expressed how much they enjoyed the opportunity to give back to our profession in a significant way.
From April 19 to April 23, the ABO conducted the written
examination at Pearson VUE centers throughout the United
States and Canada. Three hundred residents who are currently
in their final year of training participated in the examination.

2010 • PCSO Bulletin
The American Board of Orthodontics is always looking for
ways to improve the written examination and it encourages
educators to develop their own examination questions and
submit them through the American Board of Orthodontics’
website.
The American Board of Orthodontics recently implemented a
Banking process. The faculty believes that this will provide all
residency programs with an opportunity to participate in the
Initial Certification Examination. Details of the Initial Certification Examination and the Banking process can be found
on the American Board of Orthodontics’ website: http://www.
americanboardortho.com/.
The American Board of Orthodontics is also pleased to
announce that we are expanding our offices at the AAO
headquarters in St. Louis in order to accommodate hosting the Clinical Examination. We hope to hold a field test
examination in December 2010. Once the new testing center
is completed, we plan to conduct multiple examinations
throughout the year.
If you have any questions regarding the American Board
of Orthodontics, please feel free to contact me at Dugoni@
