Dr. Reilly, who first joined St. Mary because of the quality of the staff and their high level of commitment and competence, has shepherded the growth of the Cancer Center throughout his years of service. He says he hopes to see even more improvements, including changes to the oncology floor, the development of a Palliative Care Program, and the creation of a hospice. The initiative demonstrates our renewed commitment to be the best cancer care center in Bucks County and the surrounding area. It also puts the foundation in place for continued growth of St. Mary cancer services well into the future.” A Celebration of Life Cancer survivor Stacy Simcik addresses the audience at St. Mary Medical Center's "A Celebration of Life." St. Mary welcomed back hundreds of the center's most esteemed alumni – patients who have survived cancer, in part due to treatment they received at St. Mary Regional Cancer Center – for this special event. Former and current patients, as well as their guests, enjoyed tours; demonstrations of new technology such as IMRT and digital mammography; and exhibits showcasing St. Mary's full range of cancer capabilities – prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and patient support. 1201 Langhorne-Newtown Rd. P “In our pursuit of excellence, we constantly explore ways to provide the best care to patients,” said St. Mary President and Chief Executive Officer Greg Wozniak. “This advancement is the result of an extensive evaluation of radiation oncology consulting teams whose services most effectively complement those of St. Mary. All ROCNJ physicians have extensive research experience in their field of expertise and a focus on exceptional patient care.” In addition to providing on-site care, the team of ROCNJ radiation oncologists will review each patient case. DONORS TELL US WHY THEY OFFER THEIR SUPPORT This means that the combined experience of these skilled physicians is applied to the analysis of each patient’s condition and the development of individualized therapeutic recommendations. Another major benefit associated with ROCNJ is stability. Every partner in the organization has remained on staff since the team’s founding in 1985. Robert Cardinale, M.D., Brian Chon, M.D., and Diana Stripp, M.D., will each spend a significant amount of time at St. Mary, while several other members of the ROCNJ group will work on rotation as time and specific needs warrant. “We are very excited about our affiliation with St. Mary Medical Center,” said Dr. Cardinale. “It is very clear that St. Mary is taking a leadership role in radiation oncology services. This further demonstrates a commitment to offering the highest quality healthcare services possible in all aspects of patient care.” Dr. Robert Cardinale is Medical Director, St. Mary Radiation Oncology. >> YOU SHOULD KNOW St. Mary Medical Center has received the “Highest Distinction” accreditation from the American College of Surgeons and ranks in the 95th percentile for patient satisfaction. I M R T: A N E W G E N E R AT I O N C A N C E R T H E R A P Y U N V E I L E D Patients benefit through targeted radiation that limits impact on healthy cells. t. Mary is the first cancer treatment center in Lower Bucks County to offer patients Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), a state-of-the-art radiation therapy technique that enables more effective treatment of a tumor while minimizing impact on healthy tissue. S Radiation therapy is a treatment technique for cancer in which radiation energy is administered to the tumor site. This form of therapy works by destroying cancer cells that are actively reproducing. Tumor cells reproduce more quickly and more often than healthy cells and are, therefore, more likely to be affected by the radiation. According to Robert Cardinale, M.D., Medical Director, St. Mary Radiation Oncology, “Every one of our IMRT treatments is brought about through a carefully designed combination of advanced computer technology and a dedicated team of specialists from different areas of practice. The medical team is multidimensional. Using the information gathered in positioning and imaging, a radiation oncologist, radiation physicist, and dosimetrist (a person specially trained to calculate and plan radiation doses) work together to design the best IMRT treatment plan for each situation.” Todd Buch Clarence and Anne Venne Mindy Buch-Garvey Automotive Executive Appreciates Excellent Care Available Locally Appreciation for Excellent Care and Service at St. Mary Inspire These Donors Florida Resident Grateful for High Level of Care at St. Mary A s a partner in the McCafferty Auto Group, I have been able to see how McCafferty funding has provided for a variety of St. Mary’s needs in the past. However, it was a personal experience that gave me a firsthand look at the world-class treatment offered here; it helped strengthen the McCafferty commitment as well as my personal commitment. Without warning, I was diagnosed with lymphoma. After getting a second opinion from oncology experts at a downtown hospital, I realized that they were recommending the same type of treatment that was available at St. Mary. Knowing that my welfare would be in the hands of the caregivers that I selected at St. Mary, I decided to present a challenge. I offered a good-natured incentive to the people treating me that if they helped me beat my lymphoma, I would make a personal and a corporate donation. In addition, I would commit to helping raise the funds needed to insure that that they continue to have the most up-to-date technology and facilities available. I wanted everyone to have a vested interest in what happened to me. I was confident that I was in good hands. While I was able to overcome my health issue through the exceptional and personalized care I received, my treatment wasn’t the only reason for being a donor. Healthcare providers are also seeking a better quality of life away from city hospitals. I feel that as a state-of-the-art facility with the most up-to-date technology, St. Mary is able to attract the best doctors out there. With these experts available locally, this alleviates the need to travel for such intense treatments, such as chemotherapy, and helps in the recovery process. H appily married for 60 years, Clarence and Anne Venne are no strangers to giving. Their foundation, the Clarence J. Venne Foundation, started in 1998, has contributed money to a variety of domestic causes as well as international projects, including the building of both a school and a convent in Africa. Close to home, the St. Mary Foundation and the Capital Campaign are causes they truly believe in supporting. The Vennes can’t say enough about the excellent care and service they received at St. Mary, and say they are thankful for the efficiency of the doctors, labs, and technicians. Clarence added, “St. Mary is a great and wonderful hospital. All our needs for treatment are met right here, and we don’t have to travel far.” >> YOU SHOULD KNOW According to the Pennsylvania Department of Health, cancer is the second leading cause of death in Bucks County. Incident rates for prostate and breast cancer are rising and expected to continue to rise as the population ages. Lung and colon cancer are also major concerns. In fact, cancer incidence in Bucks County is accelerating faster than the incidence of cancer across the rest of the state. E ven though Mindy Buch-Garvey calls Florida home, her ties to the local community keep her involved with the St. Mary Foundation. She attends meetings of the Capital Campaign Marketing Committee and the Committee for the Capital Campaign by conference call, and feels particularly indebted to St. Mary for the high level of care they provided both her husband and her brother. { Dr. Reilly helped both my husband and my brother with their bouts of cancer. Patients receive excellent care at St. Mary. Mindy praises the staff and, in particular, Dr. Reilly whose expertise and care helped to keep both her husband and brother mobile during their bouts with cancer. When Mindy’s husband was initially struck with cancer, they traveled from Florida to Texas to receive treatment at a large cancer center. When the cancer came back a second time, they chose to receive treatment at St. Mary. Mindy said, “I truly think we received better care at St. Mary with Dr. Reilly.” Mindy looks at her involvement with St. Mary as “a way to give something back” in gratitude for the care her family has received. She says she feels indebted to St. Mary and feels that the St. Mary Foundation’s cause is a worthy one.
