’
s go back to the basics to our traditional media roots! So step right up, get your thinking caps on
,
and let
’
s get our hands messy with our Traditional Art Competition! This year, we want to see your imaginations run wild! For SMASH!'s 10 year anniversary, our mascots, Cyrus and Skadi, have joined back in on the Traditional Art Competition action! This year’s theme is… Mythology! Delve into the depths of ancient myth and mythology. Pick your place amidst ancient history
—
whether it's Greek, Egyptian, Japanese, or Celtic—

there are many cultural roots of mythology spanning across our great world, as well as countless legendary creatures to explore. Take your minds back in time to any tale or lore you may have heard before, and take Cyrus and Skadi with you! Juniors (15 & under) Whatever your inspirational myth, depict Cyrus and Skadi in the clothing or costuming relevant to that reality. Do they have nine tails like the Chinese ninetailed fox? Perhaps you may channel any of the Roman Gods or Japanese Kami. Show us your original and creative spin on extraordinary outfits of the mythical kind. Seniors (16+) Get inspired by any ancient myth and throw Cyrus and Skadi into the mix. Are they amidst battle against Greek Gods or mythical beasts? Maybe they’re frolicking with mythical creatures or perhaps they are on a quest
(
Percy Jackson style). You might even depict a detailed Egyptian prophecy
—
perhaps about SMASH! or our mascots
. Whatever you use—
any myth or mythologyrelated inspiration
—
is completely your decision, just detail us the scene that you envision. Now, take note as we’re also encouraging something special for this year’s competition.
We want BOTH age division entrants to stick minimum 1 to maximum 4 other materials onto your artworks!
That’s right, whip out those glue sticks and add some fun, flat textures onto your art (nothing that sticks out and has a chance of falling off though—keep it to 2D or relatively flat 3D objects). As this is a traditional art competition, not a mixedmedia one, majority of your artwork should be created with your normal traditional art tools. However, just to add a special element and extra flare, whether you stick on a doily (as someone did last year), get crafty and creative and have fun! Try use whatever you have around your house and show us what you can do! SMASH! 2016 ‘Mythology’ Traditional Art Competition Submission Form Due by Saturday, August 20, 2016, 9am
