PROGRESSIVES
Progressives embraced modernity and sought to reform government, industry, education
and society through the application of scientific principles, engineering methods and efficient practices. From about 1890 into the 1920s, Progressive politicians, business leaders,
journalists and social activists exerted a major influence in the US; indeed, this period is often referred to as “the Progressive Era.” Teddy Roosevelt was prominent in the Progressive
movement. Its central tenet—that government should act to improve social and economic
conditions—was a perfect match for the naturally action-oriented, tremendously highenergy politician.
