Chapters 20, 21, and 22
For this unit, students will read chapters 20, 21, and 22 in the textbook. Students will also present information from these
chapters in class. The material from Chapter 22 is partticularly important for the DBQ.

Chapter Summary Assignment
1. Students will work in groups and will present the findings of your assigned research to the class. For each
C HAPT ER - please make notes of up to 4 pages to distribute to the class. Dr. Larson will make copies for the
class. You will not only be expected to cover the material from the book, but to provide more in-depth analysis of
the material.
2. Present the information to which you are assigned to the class. Each chapter will have 30 minutes for your
presentation. You may use PowerPoint presentations, or transparencies. Be sure to let Dr. Larson know of any
special considerations at least one day IN ADVANCE.
3. You will be given time for research in the computer lab.
4. Students will be responsible for the content of ALL readings. There will be quizzes AFTER the presentations are
made – so TAKE NOTES AND ASK QUESTIONS!!!!!
5. The assignment will be worth 60 points.

1. What were the intellectual elements of the progressive outlook? Summarize the interaction of progressive ideas with the
academic disciplines of economics, philosophy, psychology, and law.
2. Compare and contrast the ideas and activities of woman progressives with those of earlier female reformers, such as those in
the abolitionist and woman suffrage movements. Did progressive women really “progress,” or were they essentially working on
the same types of issues (work, education, family) as their predecessors?
3. Describe the successes and failures of the labor movement during the Progressive Era. In what ways was this a turning point for
the labor movement?
4. Describe the struggles of African Americans to secure their rights during the Progressive Era.What aspects of progressive reform
undermined blacks’ rights?
5. Compare and contrast the administrations of Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson. What principles did they share? How
did they differ in setting goals and carrying them out?
6. Trace the role of the Supreme Court in striking down and upholding progressive legislation in cases such as Lochner v. New York
(1905), Muller v. Oregon (1908), and United States v. Standard Oil (1911). Were these rulings excessively activist, or were they
an appropriate exercise of the Court’s jurisdiction?

1. Contrast the diplomacy that was practiced before the 1890s with the diplomacy that emerged toward the end of the century.
Explain why neither the United States originally viewed diplomatic matters with great concern, and articulate how
circumstances changed.
2. Who was Alfred Thayer Mahan? How did Mahan influence thought on American expansion at the time? naval advocates, and
Mahan’s relationship with those who favored American expansion.
3. What were the noneconomic sources of American expansionism. Explain factors such as the activities and influence of
missionaries, the impact of international rivalries on American expansionist thought, the appearance of Pan-Americanism in the
1880s, the central place of expansionism earlier in American history, and the importance of social Darwinism and AngloSaxonism in the changing foreign policy climate late in the nineteenth century.
4. Evaluate William McKinley’s foreign policy. Some points to cover: What influenced McKinley’s ideas about expansionism? Was
he an effective leader during the crisis and war with Spain? Did McKinley consider the long-term consequences of
expansionism?
5. Briefly review the Spanish-American War. Be sure to include: the military situations of the United States and Spain, the
conduct of the invasion of Cuba, the campaign in Puerto Rico and how the United States was drawn into the Philippines, and
the decisive factors in the American victory.
6. Discuss the Philippine insurrection. Explain how the United States became involved in the Phillipines and give the reasons the
United States chose to remain in the islands.
7. Explain America’s historic interest in Isthmian canal. What was the American role in the Panamanian revolution?
9. Explain the reasons for the Anglo-American rapprochement of the early twentieth century.
10. What was the American open-door diplomacy toward China under William McKinley? How did this policy contrast with
Japanese- American relations during the administrations of Theodore Roosevelt and William Howard Taft. How did dollar
diplomacy influence American foreign policy?
