Fact Sheet
Project Description:
The Palm Springs Art Museum’s new Architecture and Design Center, opening on
November 9 in downtown Palm Springs, will be the hub of the museum’s
exploration of architecture and design. It will offer architecture and design-related
exhibitions, educational and community programs, as well as provide a research
space and a storage area for the museum’s growing architecture and design
collections and archives. The A+D Center is housed in a recently restored building
that was originally designed in 1961 by E. Stewart Williams to be the Santa Fe
Federal Savings & Loan. The building was designated a Class 1 historic site in
2009. Williams was one of the most important architects of the Desert Modern
style, developed in and around Palm Springs in the middle of the 20th century, and
the building is one of the prime examples of this movement.
