Periodic Table
Question… How can the patterns of the periodic table
be helpful when studying chemistry?
Name ______________________
Date:
Science 7
Period:
A scientist named Henry Mosley developed the modern period table. Mosley
discovered if the elements were arranged a certain way, predictions could be made about
the structure and properties of elements. Today we will investigate these patterns and
discover that the periodic table is a useful tool when studying chemistry.
Materials: Periodic table, colored pencils, Science textbook
Part one… Origins of the periodic table
Use your science notes and chapter 6 of the science textbook while completing
the following section.
1. Compare the way Mendeleev and Moseley organized the periodic table.
Hint… we use Moseley’s periodic table today.
2. Why are the columns in the periodic table called families?
3. At the time Moseley developed his periodic table, all of the elements we
know of today had not been discovered. What could scientists do with the
missing elements using the periodic table?
Part two… Patterns of the periodic table
Use your colored pencils to label your periodic table as directed.
1. Shade the metals as shown below.
List the physical and chemical properties that metals share.
a.
b.
c.
d.
2. Shade the nonmetals as shown below.
List the physical and chemical properties that nonmetals share.
a.
b.
c.
d.
3. Name two metalloids
What makes them metalloids?
4. Color the Alkali metals blue.
What is true of all the Alkali metals?
5. Color the Halogen family red.
What is true about all of the elements in the halogen family?
6. Color the Nobel gases green.
What is true about all of the Nobel gases?
Part three… Using the periodic table
1. Find Boron on your periodic table and complete the following.
a. Write the atomic symbol in the box.
b. Write the atomic number in the appropriate place.
c. Write the atomic mass in the appropriate place (round the mass
before you write it).
2. Now that you know the atomic number and the atomic mass of Boron,
answer the following.
a. How many protons are in an atom of Boron? _____
b. How many electrons are in an atom of Boron? _____
c. How many neutrons are in an atom of Boron? _____
3. Draw a Bohr model of Boron.
4. Complete the table below using the periodic table.

Part four… Shortcuts of the periodic table
1. How many valance electrons do the following elements have?
Lithium _____
Beryllium _____
Boron _____
Oxygen _____
What does the family number tell you about each element in the family?
2. Draw Bohr models for the following elements.
Helium
Neon
Argon
What does the row, or period, tell you about all of the elements it
contains?
