Cell Processes
Cellular Respiration
CELLULAR RESPIRATION: cells use oxygen
to release the energy stored in sugars, such as
glucose.
This process takes place
in the mitochondria.
The overall reaction for cellular respiration is:
C6H12O6 + 6O2 6CO2 + H2O + energy
Sugar
Adenosine
Tri
Phosphate
Oxygen
carbon dioxide + water
ATP
ATP is the
currency of your
body

There Are Two Types of Respiration
AEROBIC RESPIRATION: Glucose enters
the mitochondria, where it is broken down
when it combines with oxygen.
ANEROBIC RESPIRATION: (fermentation)
energy is released without oxygen.
Example: Yeast cells
Yeast Cells
Glucose is broken down into carbon dioxide,
alcohol, and A.T.P. (energy)

Used in Baking
Energy and Exercise
Your muscle cells release energy by both
anaerobic and aerobic respiration.
At rest your muscles
store energy.
Energy and Exercise
During prolonged exercise your muscle cells use
up their stores of energy and oxygen, so the
muscle cells must rely on fermentation to break
down sugars.
The waste products of fermentation is lactic acid,
which can cause a burning sensation in your
muscles.
