Melanoma, the most deadly
form of skin cancer, is the
eighth most common type of
cancer among both men and
women in New York State;
each year more than 3,700
NYS residents are diagnosed
with melanoma and about
500 New Yorkers die from
melanoma; 90% of skin
cancers can be prevented by
taking basic precautions. A
majority of melanoma cases,
the deadliest form of skin
cancer, are attributed to
excessive, unprotected
ultraviolet (UV) exposure.
Cancer screening programs
apply screening guidelines to
detect cancer at an early stage,
which improves the likelihood of
increased survival and
decreased morbidity.
A process is in place to
follow up on all positive
findings.

Screening
Event
Screening is effective in
identifying breast, cervical
and colorectal cancers. In
New York during 2010:
-77 percent of women 40 and
older were screened for
breast cancer.
-84 percent of women 18 and
older were screened for
cervical cancer.
-70 percent of adults ages 50
and older were screened for
colorectal cancer.
-Lack of health insurance
coverage is a barrier
preventing adults from
obtaining recommended
cancer screening exams.
Bassett’s mobile screening coach
is utilized for outreach screening
events for uninsured and
underinsured men (colorectal
FIT testing) and women (breast,
pap, FIT test) in three-county
region. Multiple events are held
monthly throughout tri-county
region, including special events
at Relay for Life, county fairs,
etc.
Reports are submitted to
