More than Skin Deep:
The Ritual Production
of Aztec Gods
Molly H. Bassett
Jan. 16th,
5:00 - 7:00 pm
Walnut Room, IMU
Biological evidence of Aztec sacrifice clings to
precontact artifacts, and postcontact texts depict
their gruesome nature: a man honored as a god
becomes a sacrificial victim. Dr. Bassett’s research
focuses on how the Aztecs imagined, understood,
and manufactured the deities they venerated. In
this talk, she will examine the roles of human
bodies and human skin in the ritual production of
god-bodies.
Molly Bassett is an assistant professor of Religious
Studies at Georgia State University, and a research
affilitate at the Zacatecas Institute for Research and
Teaching in Ethnology.
