InaccordancewiththeAdvancedPlacementProgram(AP),thiscourseandexamareofferedto
well-qualifiedstudentswhowishtocompletestudiesinsecondaryschoolequivalenttoan
introductorycollegecourseinworldhistory.Thiscoursesyllabushasbeenauditedand
approvedbytheCollegeBoardasincompliancewithrigorousAPstandards.
InAPWorldHistory,youwillgainadeeperunderstandingoftheworldandhumaninteraction
from8000BCEtothepresent.APWorldhistorycontentisstructuredaroundtheinvestigation
offivecoursethemesandnumerouskeyconceptsinsixchronologicalperiods.Studentswill
develophistoricalthinkingskillstobetterconstructmeaningaboutthepast,beyondaneffort
tosimplygatherinformationsuchasnames,factsandevents.
Itisimperativethatstudentsandparentsunderstandthatthiscourseisacollege-level
course.Studentsareindividuallyresponsibleforthecontentofthecourse.Itwouldbe
impossibleforaninstructortodeliverin180daysofclasstime,10,000yearsofhistoryina
meaningfulway.Studentsmustengageinindependentreadingonamostlydailybasistobe
successfulinthiscourse.Ourclasstimewillbespentinelaborationoftopics,learningthe
historicalthinkingskillsnecessaryforsuccessinhigherlevellearning,developinghistorical
assessmentandwritingskillsandclarificationoftheconnectionsbetweenthetopicsofthe
worldhistorycurriculum.
APclassesrequireadditionaltimeonthepartofthestudentsandtheteacher.Individual
consultationwiththeteacher,thelargevolumeofreadingmaterialrequired,thevolumeof
assignments,especiallyintermsofvocabularybuilding,time-linecomprehensionandessay
writingareconsiderable.AllstudentstakingAPlevelcourseswillberequiredtosignanAP
CONTRACTthatstatestheircommitmenttoandunderstandingoftherigorofthecourse.
