C.V. Diagnostic Terms
Aneurysm – weakened portion of the blood vessel wall
Arteriosclerosis – buildup of plaque on walls of artery, causes blood vessels to narrow
Atheroma – degeneration of artery walls caused by accumulation of fatty deposits,
restricting circulation
Atherosclerosis – thickening of blood vessels caused by plaque
cardiac arrest – sudden unexpected loss of heart function, breathing, and consciousness
cardiac cachexia – unintentional severe weight loss, malnutrition, wasting, caused by
heart disease
cardiomegaly – enlargement of the heart
cerebrovascular accident (CVA) – stroke; damage to the brain from interruption of blood
supply
congestive heart failure – heart doesn’t pump blood properly (ventricles)
coronary heart disease (CHD) – coronary arteries narrow and decrease in blood flow
dyslipidemia – abnormally elevated cholesterol or lipids in the blood
embolism – obstruction of blood vessel due to blood clot or other foreign matter stuck in
the blood stream
fatty streaks – first visible (to the naked eye) lesion in the development of atherosclerosis
homocysteine – homologue of amino acid cysteine, high levels related to early
development of heart disease
hypercholesterolemia – high amounts of cholesterol in the blood
hyperlipoproteinemia – high levels of lipids in the blood
hypertension (HTN) – force of blood against the walls of the arteries is too high
ischemia – inadequate blood supply to an organ
myocardial infarction (MI) – heart attack; blockage of blood flow to the heart muscle
myocarditis – inflammation of the heart muscle
plaque – cholesterol, fatty substances, cell waste, fibrin, etc.
thrombus – blood clot that forms in a vein
C.V. Symptomatic Terms
angina syndrome; angina pectoris – severe chest pain caused by reduced blood flow to
the heart
anoxia – absence of oxygen
asystole – cardiac arrest rhythm; no discernible electric activity on the ECG monitor
bradycardia – abnormally slow heart rhythm
cardia edema – increased pressures in the heart, causes swelling
claudication – cramping pain in the leg during exercise caused by obstruction of the
arteries
ischemia – inadequate blood supply to an organ
cerebral – inadequate blood flow to the brain
myocardial – inadequate blood flow to the heart
palpitation – rapid, strong, irregular heartbeat due to agitation, exercise, illness
systole – phase of heartbeat when blood pumped from chambers into the arteries
tachycardia – abnormally rapid heart rate
vasoconstriction – constriction of blood vessels, increases BP
vasodepression – opening of blood vessels, decrease BP
xanthoma – fatty deposits beneath the skin
