Beirut Arab University Faculty of Science _________________________________________________________________________ Course Specification BIOL 338 – Genetics Basic Information Course Title: Genetics Code: BIOL338 Hours: 3 per weeks Lecture: 3 Tutorial: 0 Practical: 0 Credit hours: 3 Year: 3rd Academic Year/Level: Term: Spring Specialization: Biology/Biochemistry Catalog Description: A study of the basic principles of classical and modern genetics. Topics include Mendelian inheritance and deviations from classical Mendelian ratios, pedigree analysis, gene interactions, gene mutation, linkage, gene mapping and population genetics. Prerequisite: BIOL231 Course Objectives: This course aims to provide students with an understanding of the basic Principles of Classical and Modern Genetics. The course aims to provide students with the specialist knowledge necessary for understanding Principles of Genetics. Intended Learning Outcomes (ILO’s) Knowledge and understanding: At the end of this course the students should be able to: K1- Define linkage and explain why linkage interferes with independent assortment. K2- Distinguish between parental and recombinant phenotypes. K3- Explain how crossing over can unlink genes. K4- Map a linear sequence of genes on a chromosome using given recombination frequencies from experimental crosses. K5- Explain why a recessive sex-linked gene is expressed in human males. Intellectual abilities: At the end of this course the students should be able to: I1- Analyze and interpret information from a variety of sources relevant to Principles of Genetics. I2- Exercise appropriate judgment in selecting and presenting information relevant to 1 Genetics. Professional and Practical competencies: At the end of this course the students should be able to: P1- To solve transmission genetics problems, make accurate predictions about inheritance of genetic traits, and map the locations of genes.
