Quick Questions
1. What are cells? Cells are the basic unit of structure and function in living things.
2. What are the characteristics of cells? (Hint: think about chapter 2 and the characteristics of
living things)
Reproduce, grow and develop, use energy. Respond to environment.
3. What is a prokaryotic cell? Which organisms are prokaryotic?
A prokaryotic cell is a cell without a nucleus. Bacteria are prokaryotic.
4. What is a eukaryotic cell? Which organisms are eukaryotic?
A eukaryotic cell is a cell with a true nucleus. All other living organisms (except bacteria) are
eukaryotic.
5. Define the function of the following organelles:
Mitochondria:- produces energy for the cell
Lysosome: contains digestive enzymes to break down food particles and worn out cell parts
Nucleus: controls the activities of the cell and contains DNA- hereditary information
Endoplasmic reticulum: A network of passage ways for carrying materials from one part of the cell to
another.
Golgi body: Receives materials from the ER, packages them and sends them to other parts of the cell.
Ribosome: makes proteins
6. What are the major differences between plant and animal cells? (There are 3)
Plant cells have a chloroplast, large central vacuole, cell wall
