S. 1003.428, Florida Statute, New Graduation Requirement
Online Learning
Beginning with students entering grade 9 in the 2011
-2012 school year, at least one course within the 24
credits required in this subsection must be completed through online learning. However, an online
course taken during grades 6 through 8 fulfills this
requirement. This requirement shall be met through
an online course offered by the Florida Virtual
School, an online course offered by the high school,
or an online dual enrollment course offered pursuant
to a district interinstitutional articulation agreement
pursuant to s. 1007.235.

guidance counselor approval.

For students entering ninth grade beginning in
2011-12, at least one course required for

Students may meet this requirement by
completing an online high school course offered:
-by Florida Virtual School
-by a district high school (to include traditional district schools, district franchises, and
virtual charter schools)
-as an online dual enrollment course
-by district virtual instruction programs
-by a district middle school
3. If a student in the middle school takes a high
school online course does this fulfill this requirement?
Yes. The course has to be within the 24 credits
required for high school graduation.
4. Can a half-credit online course meet the online
course graduation requirement?
Yes. A half-credit online course may meet this
requirement as long as it is within the 24 credits
required for graduation.
5. Can credit-recovery online courses be used to meet
the online course graduation requirement?
Yes. An online credit recovery course may meet
this requirement as long as the student earns high
school credit through online learning.
6. If a student takes an online course from a computer
lab or classroom in a district school, is the course still
considered an online course?
It is still an online course if the curriculum and a
majority of the instruction is accessed online. An
online teacher is separated by time and/or space.
7. Are students seeking diplomas other than the standard 24-credit high-school diploma required to meet
the online course graduation requirement (e.g., IB, 18
-credit, special diplomas)?
No. Only students seeking the standard 24-credit
diploma must meet this graduation requirement.
8. Are students required to pass the online course in
order to meet the online graduation requirement?
Yes. Section 1003.428, F. S., specifies the course
must be within the 24 credits and completed
through online learning.
9. If a student entering ninth grade in 2011-12 has
completed an online high school course for credit in
middle school prior to July 1, 2011, will it count towards this graduation requirement? Yes.
