7th Grade Midterm Review
Vocabulary
homeostasis - steady internal conditions when external conditions change
immunity - protection from infection or toxins
lymphocyte - type of white blood cell that is made in the thymus, the spleen, and bone
marrow
nutrient - part of food that is used by the body to grow and survive
organ system - group of organs that work together and perform a specific task
cell cycle - growth, development, and division
cytokinesis - division of a cell’s cytoplasm and contents
eukaryotic cell - with membrane- bound structures
prokaryotic cell - cells without membrane bound structures
interphase - cell’s period of growth and development
mitosis - division of a cell’s nucleus and contents
cell differentiation - process by which cells become different types of cells
organ - group of different tissues working together to perform a particular job
organ system - group of organs working together to complete a series of tasks
stem cell - unspecialized cell that develops into many different cell types
tissue - group of similar types of cells that work together to carry out specific tasks
cell membrane - protects the inside of a cell from the environment
cell wall - stiff structure outside the cell membrane
chloroplast membrane-bound organelle that uses light energy and makes food
cytoplasm - fluid inside a cell that contains salts and other molecules
nucleus - directs all cell activities and contains DNA
organelle membrane-bound cell structure with a specialized function

active transport - movement of substances through a cell membrane using the cell’s
energy
diffusion movement - from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower
concentration
osmosis - diffusion of water molecules only through a membrane
passive transport - movement of substances through a cell membrane without using
energy
light microscope - use light and lenses to enlarge an image of an object
compound microscope - a light microscope that uses more than one lens to magnify an
object
electron microscope - use a magnetic field to focus a beam of electrons through an
object or onto an object’s surface
