Trade Winds
• Move east to west with tropical air
• Doldrums
• Warm trade winds meet,
forcing air upwards, low
pressure
• Little to no wind, but
lots of storms
• ‘Dead water’ for sailors
• Hard to sail across the
Equator
Prevailing Westerlies
• Move west to east
*Influences our weather in the US
Horse Latitudes
• Air forced downwards –
creates areas of high pressure
• Little rain, little wind, helps
form deserts
Polar Easterlies
• Move east to west
• Very cold air
The Jet Stream
• Fast moving band of wind in the upper atmosphere.
• Found between the boundaries of the global wind
systems,
High and Low
Pressure Areas
• High pressure often
associated with good weather
• Low pressure often associated
with bad weather
High and Low Pressure
Areas
• High Pressure (Good Weather)
• Air moves downwards, spins
clockwise
• Low Pressure (Bad Weather)
• Air moves upwards, spins
counter - clockwise
Isobars
Isobars – lines that show the same air pressure
Lines can get close, but they don’t touch
Lines close together = more wind
Lines more spread out = less wind
Winds in general move from H
to L, but cycle appropriately
