5. Which two types of rainfall are being described here? Place the sentences into two groups to
explain the two different types of rainfall.

As air rises, the water vapour in the air is cooled and condenses into minute water
droplets.

The air is forced to rise up the mountain.

The warm air mass rises over the cold air mass because it is less dense.

A collection of these minute water droplets is known as a cloud. These minute water
droplets join together and become heavier. They then fall as rain.

Two air masses meet, one cold and one warm.

As the warmer air rises over the colder air, the water vapour in it is cooled and
condenses into minute water droplets.
6. Using the map, describe the
average precipitation in the
British Isles.

7. Use your knowledge to explain
the pattern of average
precipitation in the British Isles.
You should use the words:
altitude, prevailing wind and
frontal rainfall from depressions in
your answer.
8. Complete a table to identify the
different weather conditions
between summer and winter
anticyclones:

Most depressions form over the ......................... , where a mass of warm, moist,
.................. air from the south meets a mass of .................... , drier polar air
from the north.
The two air ........................ , because they have different .........................,
have different densities and this prevents them from ......................................
Warmer air (less dense – ......................... ) is forced to .......................... above
the colder air (more dense – heavier)
The ........................ between the two air masses is called a front.

10. Use the weather map below to answer the questions.
Map used courtesy of the Met Office under the terms of the UK Open Government Licence
for Public Sector Information v1.0 en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?curid=24493405

What is the name of the weather system over the UK

What is the highest pressure shown on the map?

What is the lowest pressure?

Do you think it is raining in the UK? Why / why not?

Name one country where you think it is most likely to be raining.

What direction is the wind coming from if you lived in France?
11. Draw and label an aerial view of a depression. Include the warm front, warm sector, cold
front, occluded front, wind directions and area of lowest pressure.
12. Using the case study of a tornado outline the following:

Facts, e.g. location, date, time, strength

Effects/impacts in the short term

Effects/impacts in the long term

Responses to the tornado

13. Sort the following into whether they are most likely to describe an anticyclone or a
depression.
High pressure
High wind speeds
Low pressure
Freezing temperatures in winter
Dry
Small
Heavy rain
Last several days
Sunshine and showers
Low wind speeds
Hot weather in summer
Large
Last only 24 hours
Clockwise winds
Create fog
Anticlockwise winds
14. Explain why the weather changes with the
passage of a depression.

Before the warm front

At the warm front

In the warm sector

At the cold front

Behind the cold front
