GRAFTON HIGH SCHOOL COURSE: WORLD CIVILIZATION II TEACHER: Ms. Pellegrini, [email protected] TEXT: WORLD HISTORY: CONNECTIONS TO TODAY, Volume Two (Prentice Hall, 2010) TEXT COST: $75.00 Course Overview This course is an examination of people, places and events throughout world history. This course begins with the Age of Enlightenment and concludes with an analysis of post World War II societies and civilizations. The content studied will focus on the political, social, economic, religious, scientific and technological factors that have shaped world civilization. Students will also work on developing the following literacy skills, citing textual evidence to support analysis of primary and secondary sources, describing and analyzing events and determining causal relationships as well as comparing and contrasting the point of view of two or more sources. Students are also required to participate in class and small group discussion. This course is designed as an advanced class for students who have a considerable degree of selfdiscipline and intellectual curiosity and assumes the ability on the part of the student to think critically, to read and write proficiently, and to utilize primary source materials. Research reports, projects, essays and challenging readings are regularly assigned. Course Content Unit 1: Enlightenment and Revolution (The Scientific Revolution and The Enlightenment) Unit 2: More Revolution to The Rise of Nationalism (The French Revolution and Napoleon) Unit 3: Industrialism and a New Global Age (The Industrial Revolution, Nationalism, and Imperialism) Unit 4: World Wars and Revolutions Required Work Nightly Homework Assignments One to three-page informative and descriptive writing assignments Oral presentations 2 Document Based Questions per quarter Group work Course Evaluation Criteria Tests & Quizzes = 60% Class work and participation = 20% Homework = 20% Class Expectations Bring the text, a notebook, folder, pen/pencil, and IPAD every day. You will not be allowed to leave the class to retrieve items from your locker—including assignments that are due that day! In all your dealings for this class, be responsible, be honest, and do your best. Deadlines will be given and strictly enforced. No late work will be accepted. No extra credit will be offered. Absent? If you are absent it is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to find out what you missed and to have it for the next class. Homework will be updated on a daily basis on my Google classroom website. If you miss a test or quiz you will be expected to take it the next class. Failure to be aware of a quiz or test because of an absence will not be an excuse to not take it. If you come in late and miss a quiz or test you must take it that day or risk forfeiting any credit. Classroom Expectations for iPad Use Students will be held to all the standards and requirements listed in the Acceptable Use Policy as outlined in the Grafton High School Student/Parent Handbook which can be found at the district website. Students are expected to come to school with the iPads charged for the day. Students should only be working on their assigned iPad and should not be sharing iPads with each other. Demonstrate patience and listening skills by waiting and listening for teacher instructions before proceeding with the activity. Checking email, social media (Facebook, Twitter, etc.), texting, unpermitted online chatting (facetime), and/or “IM”ing from the iPad is not allowed. Off topic surfing the Internet is not permitted. Students will follow specific directions from the classroom teacher when the Internet is involved in a project. No Food or Drink should be near the iPads at anytime. Cheating and plagiarism is prohibited. 2 Social Studies Homework Grading Rubric Homework is assigned to help students understand concepts and skills that are discussed in class. No late homework will be accepted for credit. Homework requirements 1. Please have the following heading on all assignments: Name Date Period number My name, Ms. Pellegrini (optional) Homework assignments will be graded based on the following criteria: The following is needed for full credit (100%) The heading is complete. The assignment is passed in when due. The assignment is neat, legible, and well organized. The student has followed any verbal or written directions given by the instructor. The assignment has been entirely completed. There has been a strong effort made to have all answers, or aspects of the assignment, correct based on what is in the text and what is taught in class. The following is needed for half credit. (50%) The assignment is passed in when due. The assignment is missing one of the above components listed to get full credit. (For example, if part of the heading is missing, or if only 5 out of 6 questions were answered.) The assignment must be at least half completed and correct. The following is given for a student to earn no credit. (0%) The assignment was not passed in. The homework was late without permission from the instructor or a school administrator. Less than half of the assignment is complete and correct. More than one requirement is missing to earn full credit. 3 Parents Page To promote students achievement at the high school level I ask for your support on the following policies and guidelines. NO LATE WORK ACCEPTED: In order to help teach our students the importance of deadlines, please understand that there will be no late homework accepted. Even is the student has the assignment completed and left it at home or in their locker, if it is not in class on the due date then no credit will be awarded. Please reinforce this with your child. MAKE UP WORK: In accordance with the Grafton High School Handbook: An excused absence or absence carries with it the opportunity to make up all assignments upon the student’s return to school. A student will have minimally the number of school days he/she was out to make-up the work from the day of return. For example, if a student was out for one day, he/she will have one day to make up the work. If a student was out for two days, he/she will have two days to make up the work. If a student was out of school, he/she is responsible for obtaining any missing work the day he/she returns to school. Please have your son or daughter see me the day he or she returns from schools.
